Android started to support AV1 since Android 10 and has been using libgav1 as a fallback on devices that don't have a hardware decoder. We believe that dav1d performs better and should be used unless a hardware decoder is available.
Bug 1815824 enabled the Android AV1 platform decoder for software and hardware, making libgav1 the default decoder on older devices without hardware support. Dav1d should be preferred on these devices.
