Description.
When I navigate through the message list with JAWS 2023 and Thunderbird 112 Beta 1, a random message opens as soon as I select a message with the arrow keys. I could only test this behavior with JAWS, I don't know how other screen readers behave here.
Steps to reproduce
- Download the latest version of JAWS 2023 from here and install it.
- Run Thunderbird
- Navigate to the message list with TAB and move through the messages with the arrow keys.
Result
Once a message is selected with the arrow keys, that message opens. I have not been able to find a pattern as to exactly when this happens.
Expected
No message should open until it is opened with Enter.

Ali, What do you mean by "open"? It appears in message preview? In a tab? Standalone message window?

Since I'm temporarily back on the beta 111, I can't say for sure if the emails open in a new tab. However, it seems to me that the mails are opened in a tab or in a new window, depending on the settings. This happens as soon as you select a message with the arrow keys. This happens once or sometimes randomly.

Well, about two weeks ago there was a daily build of thunderbird where using up and down arrow keys to navigate in the message list presented different message through the screen reader than the one that can be seen in the preview or the one which got opened in a new tab / new window after pressing the enter key.
This is now working as expected when testing with the latest daily build of Thunderbird 113. Is is the same thing you are seeing with Thunderbird 112 with Jaws?
I can only test with orca on linux in the mean time though.

Sorry, I don't know, I wasn't paying attention to that at all. I only noticed that a message suddenly opened when I navigated through the message list, but I didn't press enter or something else. I may test this again once the 113 beta is released though. I'm not working with the daily builds.
This does not seem to occur in Thunderbird Daily anymore. Only with junk mails.
