User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/111.0

Steps to reproduce:

I'm opening new Firefox window (non-private) from pinned Firefox icon.

Actual results:

Non-private windows are displayed in private window groups, together with private windows (see attached screenshot). Problem occurs also if there is no private windows opened.

Expected results:

Firefox window should be visible under "normal" icon, which I used to open it.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Private Browsing' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hello,
Thank you for reporting the issue.
I tried unsuccessfully to reproduce it on Win 10 and Win 11 with Fx version 111.0, following these steps:
A.

  1. Launch Firefox - regular window.
  2. Pin Firefox to the Taskbar, if it isn’t already.
  3. R-click on the pined Regular Fx icon (or in the Fx window, open the “Application menu”/burger menu)
  4. Select “New private window” (pin it).
  5. Repeat 3.
  6. Select “New window”.
  7. Close regular windows.
  8. R-click on the (pinned) Private Fx icon (or in the Fx window, open the “Application menu”/burger menu)
  9. Repeat 6.

B. Also tried to pin the Private window and unpin the Regular one, close all Fx windows, open a regular window from the pined Private one.

Actual results:
at all times, the two types of windows are automatically grouped in private and non-private.

Could you please answer the following questions in order to further investigate this issue?

  1. Does this issue happen with a new profile?
Here is a link on how to create one: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles
  2. Does this issue happen in the latest nightly?

Hello,
sorry for delay. I tried to refresh Firefox (remove all extensions) from Profile Manager and problem does not occur anymore. So problem might be in one of extensions. I installed again most of them, and problem haven't returned as for now.
I didn't tried nighly, but since reporting I got update to 111.0.1 and problem still persisted on that "broken" profile.

Hi Ben, could you find out the right person who can handle this bug? Thanks.

Redirecting to Nicholas, who I believe is the right person at the moment.

I tried to reproduce your issue without any success.
Would you be so kind as to update the browser to the latest version and confirm if this issue is still happening?
Thank you.

Given this went away with a profile refresh, the issue was probably related to about:config settings conflicting in some way. If we had the broken profile it might make sense to investigate by comparing against a normal profile. Without a profile this is probably an odd case that isn't worth the time investment to attempt to reason about.

:Ardelean Given we can't currently reproduce and the profile in question was likely in a non-standard configuration and unlikely to warrant the more involved investigation now necessary, how should we mark this bug?

Based on the points you raised, I think it would be safe to say that this bug could be marked as WORKSFORME, and could be re-opened in the future if this particular issue is encountered again.
