Achim, when you say "marked sent" what exactly do mean? This could be a duplicate of bug 122521, but I think it's more likely a dupe of bug 154184; that bug has been fixed as of 1.4b. Can you try a current build of Mozilla (such as the 1.4rc build) and determine if you still see this problem? Please mark this bug as the appropriate duplicate, or as "Resolved|WorksForMe", or say something if it is still a problem for you with a current build.
I don`t think it`s a duplicate of 154184, but there are some similarities to bug 122521. I figured out that it has notghing to do with our router (changed to DSL by now and could reproduce it on a modem connected computer). I had the same problem again last week: A friend of mine got a new email account at freenet.de. This ISP requires SMTP authentication. For some reason I did not correctly configure the outgoing server settings, but when sending emails, I did not receive any error messages and the mail was transferred to the "sent" folder (this is what I meant by "marked sent"), hence, I thought that the mails were delivered. It turned out that they were not.
Given that extra information, I believe this is a dupe. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 122521 ***
