Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2) Gecko/20021126 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.2) Gecko/20021126 Various preference dialog boxes have layout problems when the message box font is set to font:Verdana, size:8. 1. Navigator/History has the "Clear History" and "Clear Location Bar" buttons clipped as well as the grouping rectangles that surround those sections. 2. All three sections of Navigator/Helper Applications are severely clipped. The word "Reset" in the "Reset" button from the "Opening files" group is almost entirely clipped. All the text in the "Plug-in Finder Service" group is clipped. All three buttons in the "Specify which application..." group are clipped. 3. "Mail & Newsgroups" main panel has an edit box clipped and the grouping rectangles clipped. 4. "Main & Newsgroups"/Windows has its grouping rectangle clipped. 5. "Main & Newsgroups"/"Message Display" has both grouping rectangles and the color chooser clipped. 6. "Main & Newsgroups"/"Return Receipts" has its grouping rectangle and its three drop-down choosers clipped. 7. Advanced/Cache has all three buttons and its grouping rectangle clipped. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Changing to Verdana 8 for message box text requires going to "Display Properties" and selecting its Appearance tab. The easiest way to get to "Display Properties" is to right-click on the desktop, though it is also available through the control panel. At this point in Windows XP (unlike Windows 98), you have to click on the "Advanced" button to get to the right dialog box, called "Advanced Appearance" in Windows XP. The item drop-down has a choice called "Message Box"; after selecting that, you can switch to Verdana and font size 8. In Mozilla, all that's necessary is to pick Edit/Preferences from the menu and then select the right item as mentioned previously. Actual Results: (see details for list of clipped items) Verdana is one of the wider fonts; others such as Comic Sans MS do not have this problem. But Verdana was specifically designed for computer screens (see http://www.microsoft.com/typography/web/fonts/verdana/default.htm), so it seems worthwhile to fix this problem.
