Steps to reproduce:
Found this to be inconsistent. Occurred once, then actually searched DuckDuckGo. Attempted to replicate using "keyword.enabled = false" in about:config.
- Found article talking about "quack.exe"
- highlighted "quack.exe"
- Right-clicked, then selected "Search DuckDuckGo for "quack.exe"
Actual results:
New tab opened, with Server Not Found page displayed ("Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.")
Expected results:
New tab opening, with DuckDuckGo search for "quack.exe".

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hello, thank you for bringing these up.
"Right-click searching a <term>.<TLD> uses address bar not Search bar"
- this is intended behaviour
"Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site."
I tried unsuccessfully to reproduce the issue on MacOs12 with Fx versions 110, 111 and 112.0.2 as follows:
Preconditions:
- DuckDuckGo is the default search engine (about:preferences#search ->"Default Search Engine" ->select "DuckDuckGo")
- search bar is active (about:preferences#search ->Search Bar -> check "Add search bar in toolbar")
- Also tried setting "false" one or both of these properties:
keyword.enabled = false
browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.handoffToAwesomebar
Steps:
- Firefox is launched.
- Go to a site containing "quack.exe" (e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17931631)
- Here I tried 2 things:
a. Select "quack.exe"
b. Ctrl/Cmd+F find "quack.exe" on the page so the text is highlighted - R-click on the a. selected/b. highlighted "quack.exe" text
- Click on "Search DuckDuckGo for "quack.exe""
More info
Could you please answer a few question so we can sort this out:
- "Attempted to replicate using "keyword.enabled = false"" - did this attempt fail and in the end it was still just one occurance?
- What OS were you using?

Regarding your questions:
- Yes, the attempt with "keyword.enabled = false" failed to reproduce the bug. I only experienced one occurrence. I retried again today without reproducing the bug.
- Linux Mint 20 XFCE 64-bit

Hello! We tried to reproduce the issue on Windows 10x64 and Ubuntu 22 with Firefox 118.0a1 (2023-08-07) while having DuckDuckGo set as the default search engine and searching for quack.exe by using "Search DuckDuckGo for "quack.exe"" context menu option but without any luck. Tried this while having keyword.enabled: false/ true.
Given that the issue occurred only once and can no longer be reproduced I'm gonna close this issue as WFM. If the issue is still occurring feel free to reopen this issue. Thank you!

Thanks! I just tried again with 114.0.2, the issue did not occur. If it occurs again I can re-open.
