User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021203 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021203 I sometimes receive e-mails from in-laws in Taiwan. Although the message itself is in English, the encoding seems to be in "Chinese Traditional (Big5)" - at least that's the coding that's checked off when I try to reply (is that another bug? Shouldn't the reply be in MY default character coding (especially since I have chosen in my Preferences to always send in "plain text"?) Anyway, the line wrapping I have specified to occur after 78 characters, occurs much earlier - presumably because the font/coding is bigger than my normal composition/encoding. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Have someone send a Big-5 encoded e-mail 2. Reply to it with the original quoted 3. Try entering the number of characters specfied by your line-wrap. Actual Results: Lines get wrapped much earlier. Expected Results: Wrapped at the indicated character count.

Thinking about it some more, I think there are two 'problems': 1) the line-wrap is not being honored when the original message that is not in Western/standard encoding is being quoted. 2) What encoding should the reply be in? It seems that there's no choice - since the original is being quoted, the encoding of the reply needs to be the same as that of the quoted text? My original post qualified that the original message was in "Big-5". But I think the probably occurs with any reply whose encoding is not displayed in the standard/Western/fixed-sized 10p font I selected for composition.
Thomas Wolf: is this bug still a problem for you? Have you tried upgrading to a current version of Mozilla (1.3 or 1.4)? I find that if I compose a message and specify Big5 encoding, the wrap occurs at the correct column, altho the wider text causes the line to exceed the boundary of my default compose window. If I send the mail to myself and then reply to it, I do not see any wrap behavior that is different from plain composition.
