Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/113.0

Steps to reproduce:

I clicked on the following link...
http://ftp.ch.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/pygobject-2/python-gobject-2_2.28.6-13+b1_amd64.deb

Actual results:

It looked like the download started (I saw the pulsing download icon) but the download remained at 0%. Even when I cancelled the download, the download icon continued to pulse

Expected results:

The file should have been downloaded to my default download folder

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Downloads Panel' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Does this happen when you try downloading the file again? Can you still replicate this with a new profile?

Hi,

Yes it does. To be honest, this has been happening for a long time (probably years) and I've always been too lazy to report it.

In the last few years I've had quite a few new profiles and it's always been the same.

The strange thing is, it doesn't happen with EVERY download, only certain ones. If I'm not mistaken, it only seems to happen when the link
is an ftp download (even though the path starts with http://)

I know the link is ok, because I opened a command prompt and downloaded the file directly in 2 seconds with wget.

did you see a prompt for potentially unsecure download (since this is http) and confirmed to unblock it? That's what I'd expect in this case, and I wonder if you may have some userchrome modifications or add-ons that prevents the unblocking from showing up.
Could you please try downloading in troubleshoot mode and see if the behavior differs in it?
It may also be beneficial to attach a log from about:support to this bug report.

Yes that was it. It was being blocked as 'insecure' because it was http.

I changed 'dom.block_download_insecure' to false and now it works.

I'm using Popup Blocker Ultimate, so that's possibly what's blocking the unblock message

The severity field is not set for this bug.
:mak, could you have a look please?

I don't think an add-on should be able to block ui panels.
If you can reproduce easily, could you please go to the Browser Console and check if any errors related to downloads or panels are printed on it? Then it would be nice to paste them here.

Given that it's been a month, I will close this out as without more details we cannot do anything to fix it. We can reopen if more details become available.
