Details
Steps to reproduce:
Automatic download of Firefox 114.0.1 on Windows 11 Laptop appears to have caused problems.
Actual results:
Extensions that used to have icons on the menu bar no longer display there and they do not appear in the puzzle piece icon's drop down list although they are shown as being installed if I attempt to manage extensions.
Expected results:
These extensions should be available to use and to manage via the puzzle piece icon

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'WebExtensions::Untriaged' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi Alex
The extensions that I lost are
Ghostery, Privacy Badger and Clear Browsing data
I have reinstalled Firefox and reloaded these extensions. Clear Browsing data still did not appear on the menu bar after a reload.
hope that helps
Sandy

Hi, do you have "never remember history" set in the Firefox settings (about:preferences > History)?

Hi William
Yes when this problem occurred I had turned off history.
Currently Firefox is using custom settings but I will change that to never remember history and see what happens. Will let you know.

Hi William
If I turn off history the extensions icons disappear from the task bar. According to the "Manage Extensions" page they are apparently still loaded but are no longer available from the puzzle piece or the task bar.
In addition clicking on the the puzzle icon sends me to a different place and does not display the list of installed extensions.
I tried to drop a screen dump here to show you that page but that didn't work.
It is called "about:addons" in the URL bar.
I will change the history seting back to remember history and see what happens - and see if the extension icons return to the menu bar?
cheers
Sandy

Hi William
If I restore History the extension icons come back onto the task bar.
I don't need or want to keep browsing history and so this is pretty annoying behavior by Firefox's browser. Hope you can fix it soon.
cheers
Sandy

Hello,
As per Comment 4, setting “Never remember history” will enable permanent private mode in the browser and all installed extensions, if not explicitly allowed access to private windows will no longer show up on the UI (but are still installed and appear in about:addons as you observed).
The solution to this would be:
-
to either allow the extensions access to private windows. To do this, go to about:addons select the “Extensions” tab at the left, click on each extension card to access the detail page of the extension and then allow access to private windows by selecting “Allow” in the “Run in Private Windows” section. You should see the extension icons return to the toolbar or the extensions panel.
-
to disable “Never remember history” which will revert Firefox to function in normal mode.
So this would not be a bug and I will close it as Works For Me, however in case of error, please re-open it.
