Steps to reproduce:

Search for a small string like "Hu".

Actual results:

The UI blocks for at least 10 seconds with the popup "Searching..."

Expected results:

the search can take time but it should not block the whole UI. It gives the impression that thunderbird has frozen.

It is worse with "Ting".

I believe this may be related to stemming (bug #752844)?

Yes, this would be nothing new.

Search for a small string like "Hu". The UI blocks for at least 10 seconds with the popup "Searching..."

  1. "Searching..." is certainly not blocking - at least on Windows I can click elsewhere in the UI without any problem.
  2. I think you have a resource issue or something is interfering with Thunderbird. For a short string that can't possibly return any results, the feedback should be instantaneous, with no "searching...".

Please test with Thunderbird in troubleshoot mode.
If it still happens in troubleshoot mode, please also describe your hardware.

I'm going to close this. It still happens but it is difficult to reproduce. I can wait 10 seconds for the results and there are far more annoying bugs in Thunderbird (for example, bug 1843839) to waste time with this one.
