Steps to reproduce:
Open Thunderbird after some tasks/events with a past due deadline have been completed on a remote server.
Actual results:
Reminder dialog is displayed indicating that the task is past due and still needs to be completed.
If you try to complete the task, you are told that changes on the server have occurred. You then need to decide to overwrite or keep server changes.
Expected results:
On startup, Thunderbird should sync with the remote caldav servers before displaying any reminders.

Each time I open Thunderbird I receive a bunch of notifications about tasks/events that have already been completed on the server side.

I'm experiencing the same issue. It may be related to the number of CalDAV calendars (5) or events (500+). But when using Thunderbird for daily business these are not uncommon numbers, I guess.
That's correct. One calendar doesn't present much of an issue, but when there are a dozen or so calendars each with their own set of tasks/events that have already expired or been completed on other clients, the user is stuck dismissing many (sometimes dozens) old task or event reminders with a dialog like the attached screenshot.
