Steps to reproduce:

Having Xiaomi Mi10 MIUI 14.0.2.0 Android 13.

Installed official Reddit and 4PDA apps.
Firefox v.114.2 shows a button "Open in App" in tab menu when visiting reddit.com and 4pda.to.
Firefox v.115.2 doesn't show the button.

Already tried to reinstall Firefox and reset system preferences of "Link opening" for the apps above. After the last action, the button is started to show, but tapping it does nothing.

Actual results:

Tab Menu has no the button "Open in App" before resetting preferences of "Link opening".
After resetting, button showing but works incorrect way - only calls a menu with two browser choices.

Expected results:

Link opened in app.

I have Mi11 Lite 5G with Android 13 and MIUI 14.0.23. I downloaded the Reddit app, and in Firefox v115.2, the button shows up. I clicked on it, and everything seems to work fine for me.

But I confirm that the button doesn't pop up for 4pda.to

Upd. The Reddit app was updated on July 17th. Probably that's where they fixed it.

I write here so it's easier to track.

I wrote to the app developer (Archive Reader app), and he thinks that the problem has to do with the domain verification. The app in question is an unofficial one, so domain verification for it is not happening.

But the problem is that Firefox showed an "Open in the app" button some time ago. After one of its updates, the option disappeared. If it's impossible to add back this button due to domain verification, may I suggest adding "Open in.." like in Firefox Focus?

I suspect that the 4PDA app issue has a similar nature; they didn't do domain verification properly.

Nothing recently changed for the "Open in the app" menu recently. But there were some changes in how "Open links in apps" works. It might have affected this. I'll take a look. Also I've noticed recently that Android behaviour also changed for Android 13. Can you please check on Android 12 this issue is also reproducible? Thanks

I don't have a device with Android 12. I'll try to find smth and write back here

I managed to quickly find a Samsung device with Android 12, which has a different interface for app management.

In the app management menu (open links section), the domain "archiveofourown.org" was turned off by default, so the menu in Firefox was not there. After I manually enabled the domain (thus probably bypassing domain verification, as I don't have to enable this for the youtube app) - the menu "Open in the app" appeared in Firefox. Everything started working fine.

Some technical info about the device: Samsung tablet, Android 12, One UI Core 4.1, updated on May 1, 2023

Thank you for the report!
Could you retry on your device?

I was not able to reproduce this neither with the Reddit app, nor with the 4PDA app.
I've tested with Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (Android 9), on all the latest Firefox for Android versions.

Hi there. Do you mean to retry with the newest 117.0.1 version?
I have still same issue even after my ROM got updated (to MIUI 14.0.4.0) day ago.

If I'm installing Firefox v.114 it can open web-sites in app and shows the button.
But if I updating it via GPlay or via apk-file installing - the feature goes away.

Maybe there's some technical info from my phone I can provide? I have root, and I'm an advanced android user, fyi.

Also. I'm using non-official patched Reddit app and 4PDA client directly from the forum (both not from the Google Play).
And as I already said, Fenix v.114 worked fine with these kinds of apps.

Update: In Firefox Focus v.117 "Open in..." function successfully detect apps for Reddit, 4PDA and Twitter (that is also affected by this bug).

Thank you for the response!

Sure. Added video (couldn't make it shorter) and log above.

Honestly. I don't know what to say.

I found out that this bug is not Fenix-related. This is MIUI issue. MIUI user interface does not provide any option to properly enable non-verified links handling by app. As my video shows at the first frames MIUI shows non-verified domains as "Enabled", but that is wrong.

So I found a way to open pure-android system screen of links handlers and properly activated disabled domains in twitter/reddit/4pda apps.

I apologize profusely for opening this bug-report and wasting everyone's time.

Regards,
schqual.
