User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/115.0

Steps to reproduce:

I specify selected inboxes and other IMAP folders to be captured by Unified Inbox.

Actual results:

When the additional IMAP folders are Inbox subfolders their messages are captured by Unified Inbox correctly. When they are not inbox subfolders, their messages are not captured.

Expected results:

Ideally, folders that are not inbox subfolders should be processed too. If they are not processed, then the user should not be allowed to select them under Unified Inbox. Users should also be able to create Unified Folders that unify messages from any user-specified folders, rather than just predefined Inbox, Sent etc.

Perhaps you mean you want to edit the properties of the unified inbox?

I specify selected inboxes and other IMAP folders to be captured by Unified Inbox.

Thunderbird doesn't have a "capture" function. Please list the steps

When I say the messages of a folder are not 'captured' in Unified folders I simply mean its messages are not shown in Unified Folders.

Here are some indicative steps:

  • Folders pane | Unified Folders | Inbox | right-click Properties | Match all messages | Choose...

  • I select folders out of eight IMAP accounts with the following pattern:

  • Acc1
    -- Inbox [x] (1)
    ---- custom_subfolder1 [ ]
    ---- custom_subfolder2 [x] (2)
    ---- custom_subfolder3 [ ]
    ---- Sent [ ]
    ---- etc
    Acc2
    -- Inbox [x] (3)
    -- custom_folder1 [ ]
    -- custom_folder2 [x] (4)
    -- custom_folder3 [ ]
    -- Sent [ ]
    -- etc

Unified folders looks like this:

Inbox [correctly showing (1), (2), (3), (4)]
-- Acc1 [correctly showing (1)]
---- custom_subfolder2 [correctly showing (2)]
-- Acc2 [correctly showing (3)]
[Incorrectly, (4) as a folder is missing from this branch even though Unified Inbox includes its messages]
-- etc
...
Acc2 [Note: this is one of the 'leftovers' branches further down]
-- custom_folder1
-- custom_folder2 [incorrect: this is (4) missing from Unified Inbox branch above]
-- custom_folder3
-- etc

Acc1 [incorrectly, this 'leftovers' branch is missing completely, so these non-Unified subfolders are inaccessible until you switch on 'All Folders']
-- custom_subfolder1
-- custom_subfolder3
-- etc

meso5, Is your issue gone in 115.3.1 - better / worse ?

It's the same. Custom folders that are not inbox subfolders are ignored by Unified Folders even when they are selected for inclusion under Unified Folders.

It's the same. Custom folders that are not inbox subfolders are ignored by Unified Folders even when they are selected for inclusion under Unified Folders.

Yes, I think this is correct. I have an account where all the folders are sub-folders of Inbox. I can select (or un-select) any of these folder and they appear (or disappear) in the unified Inbox view for that account.

For other accounts, where Inbox is on the same level as all other folders, when I select a folder for inclusion in the the unified view for Inbox, it never appears under that respective account. However, as the reporter points out, the messages for that selected folder do correctly appear in the top level unified Inbox list.

I'm not an everyday unified view user so I'm saying this is a regression and that with 102 and earlier it worked as expected. So it appears to be a UI issue and not an IMAP or other network related problem.

Just an observation, existing unified configurations made with 102 and earlier should still show the correct selected folders for the accounts even for non-inbox sub-folders. So this bug would only be seen if the user wants to make a change.
Finally, the bug applies to all the other unified categories (Drafts, Sent etc) and not just Inbox.

I think I'm wrong. After reading bug 1847401 and running an older version (about 110 which is mostly the same as 102) it appears that seeing only what is under Inbox is how it now works, even if you select other folders. With 102, you can still select any folder but only the top level Inbox appears so you never see any selected Inbox sub-folders. So that's an improvement.
After re-reading comment 0 above, I think the reporter is requesting an enhancement to also show any selected folder, even if not a sub-folder of inbox.

Here's how it currently works.
I have an account structured like this:

gds@chartertn.net
  Inbox
    todo
  bugzilla@mozilla

If I include all the folders in a unified Inbox I see:

Inbox
  gds@chartertn.net
    Inbox
      todo

bugzilla@mozilla doesn't appear, although it's messages appear in Inbox. OnlyInbox and todo, sub-folder of inbox, appear.
The reporter also points out (at end of comment 2) that down below the account would appear empty since all the selected folders are "moved" into the unified inbox. So, in my example, the folder bugzilla@mozilla can only be accessed as a complete folder by showing "All Folders" again.

So not sure if this is an enhancement or a bug. If a bug, we should not allow folders that are not sub-folders of inbox to be selected. If an enhancement, need to show any selected folders that aren't a sub-folder of inbox to be seen just like Inbox and sub-folders of Inbox.

One other small bug: When you select a random folder for unified, it is "moved" (removed) from the account listing down below to the unified view. But when you un-select that folder from unified, the folder doesn't re-appear in the account listing down below until you restart TB.
