I can't seem to reproduce this.
Are you using any add-on? Can you restart in troubleshoot mode and see if still happens?
Does it happen also when you mark the message as unread via context menu, keyboard, or only when clicking on the green icon?

A possibility is bug 1824889 which was fixed in Thunderbird 115.2.3:
