Steps to reproduce:

Open Thunderbird.

See in a toolbar the 'compact' icon-and-text. (I think, though I am uncertain, that by default the 'compact' icon appears on a visible toobar.)

Actual results:

I was confused - because in Thunderbird 'compact' means both (1) an operation performed upon stored email, and (2) a UI setting.

Expected results:

I think you should rename either the aforementioned 1 or else rename the aforementioned 2.

It's not the default. That icon is there because you had it in your customized toolbar in 102 before upgrading. We maintain customized toolbars of existing profiles, but by default the toolbar on a new profile only has the search bar.

I agree that this button is a bit confusing and it should need improvements.

• We should rename the button to "Compact folder".
• We should have an icon that represent an archive getting squished and not use the same icon as the Density compact mode.

Joined effort here:

• Elizabeth, does "Compact folder" make sense for this button? Too long? Do you have a better suggestion?
• Micah, can you make a "compact folder" icon for this?

Let's target this bug for 115 only for the icon update.

I agree that "Compact Folder" would be clearer and that the icon should be different.

It sounds like any text changes will be a separate patch from the icon changes, correct? Update: See bug 1846757.

We also have "Compact" in the folder menu and that could be updated to "Compact Folder" for clarity.
