Steps to reproduce:

  • go to Google Maps
  • update my location

I use Firefox on Ubuntu.
I tried amending geo.provider.network.url, without success.

Actual results:

  • the map is centered at Warsaw, Poland (around 30km from my actual location)
  • when taking directions, my location is set as Warsaw

From my research (checking on location sites) it looks like the location is determined on a basis of IP address.

Expected results:

The location should be accurate (Wołomin, Poland).

It works as expected out of the box in Chromium, so I reckon it's possible to implement (for example check to which antenna (?) is my WiFi connecting to).

Not sure if anyone cares, but for me it's a deal-breaker and I'm switching to Chromium because of that.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Networking' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Google Maps have access to my location, the information is visible when being on the site, I click the location icon in the address bar.

I also tried clearing cache and even creating a new Ubuntu user to check there on completely fresh Firefox, it didn't help. Google says it cannot determine my precise location and shows the same Warsaw location, probably based on IP.

The severity field is not set for this bug.

I'm trying to reproduce this issue on my end, and I'm also on Linux but using Fedora. And of course it works for me :/

Unfortunately I don't really know who would know more, but I've seen Emilio at least discussing geolocation topics, so maybe he knows more.

Are you using a snap? There's a variety of geolocation providers we can use on Linux here depending on availability etc.

Is there any interesting prefs starting with geo that you might have tweaked on about:config?

My guess is that you might be falling back to either mls or the testing one.

Things to check if you're on a snap would be whether location services are enabled in the settings, and whether the location portal is used (bug 1759840)
