Chimera and Mozilla display the image as expected Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. go to the above url- http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=9833 2. click on the link to one of the attachments Actual Results: A window pops-up and asks the user if he/she wants to download the gif or use another application to display it Expected Results: phoenix should display the image inline this happens to me both on windows 98 and on windows xp pro- both clean installs of phoenix. Chimera (on mac osx) and mozilla (on both platforms) display the file inline as expected.

In the HTTP headers of http://www.openoffice.org/issues/showattachment.cgi?attach_id=3901&file=Image9.gif (one of the attachments from the URI you gave), you find the following instructions: Content-disposition: attachment; filename=Image9.gif That means that asking the user what he wants to do with the file is the correct behaviour, which is also in Mozilla 1.3a (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021212) on w2k. This could be marked as a dupe of bug 98360, but since bug 98360 was about the exact opposite (ie. prompting the user instead of displaying attachments), it's probably just INVALID.

Then if this is correct behavior, why does the "Always ask before opening this type of file" have no effect the next time the link is clicked when it is unchecked?
This is also the correct behaviour. See bug 98360 comment #44 and #45. However, you might want to file a bug (for Mozilla) to remove this line & checkbox for this specific case, since it's useless UI.
