(Whiteboard: [View | Threads | Unread was set])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/117.0

Steps to reproduce:

Using a Pop mail server with TB 102.15.0 (64bit). Settings set to leave messages on server and do not delete until I delete them. These settings have been in effect for 10+ years without a problem.

Beginning yesterday, new messages downloaded into Inbox and displayed as unread.

After reading a message, it is marked as read per the settings.

Leave Inbox and going to another folder (Sent, etc.).

Return to Inbox and read messages have disappeared.. Missing messages are not in Trash or Junk folders.

Actual results:

Read messages disappeared after leaving Inbox

Expected results:

Per settings, Read messages should be retained until I delete them.

Did you change the folder retention settings (see folder properties)?
Or perhaps some 3rd party software (Antivirus?) interfering?
Try version 115.

Installed 115 and behavior is the same. Retention settings are unchanged: Do Not Delete Amy Messages. Norton 360 used for 8 years without incident, no changes made to settings. Copying new messages into archive folder to avoid losing them before they are dealt with.

Just noticed in 115,title shows "Inbox 121 messages". Only 35 messages appear in the inbox.

Magnus: This is a real pain to deal with -- have to copy every incoming message to another folder to be sure I don't lose them before dealing with them. I'm now in TB 115.2. To reitierate:
A message in the Inbox is marked as read
If I leave the Inbox and return, all read messages are no longer displayed.
The lost messages are not in Trash, Junk or any other folder.
The message count on the Inbox title shows a much larger number of message than are displayed in the Inbox.
For example, currently there are 5 unread messages in the Inbox, the total displayed next to the title is 147.

So it seems the message are not being deleted but just not being displayed.

Any thought or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Perhaps folder properties  | Repair Folder could help

Thanks Magnus but no luck -- repaired the folder and they're still disappearing. Is it possible that these messages are incorrectly being marked as though they were read and deleted (to prevent continued message display until the folder is compacted or TB Closed to remove them)?

I would still find it likely some 3rd party app is interfering.
You would have to dig around in the profile folder to figure out what might be wrong. If you're adventurous, you could try setting mail.store_conversion_enabled and then in the account server settings change to using maildir (which is somewhat experimental still) for storage.

Not sure I want to wade into the profile folder especially if maifdir is still experimental. The only 3rd party app I have is Norton 360 and nothing has been changed since before this began happening other than the upgrade to TB 102 and continuing thru the current TB 115 2.2. At present both folders appear empty but the headings show 18 messages in Junk and 141 in Inbox. If I Move or Copy a message into Inbox it doesn't appear but the message count in the title increases. Seems to indicate the messages are there but not displaying since this began.

Magnus: Letting you know that these issues have been resolved thanks to suggestions from sfhowes on the Thunderbird help forum. View> Threads was set to Unread. Changing that to All resolved all of these issues:

The 216 messages shown in the Inbox header were displayed and able to be dealt with. Header count now matches displayed messages in the Inbox.

Read messages in the Inbox no longer disappear after leaving the Inbox.

And an (apparently) related issue with Junk was also resolved. Previously, marking a message in the folder as Not Junk caused it to disappear and not be shown in any other folder. With the change, marking the message as Not Junk moves it to the Inbox as it should and marking an Inbox message as Junk also moves it properly to Junk.

So at this point, all of my issues have been resolved and this bug can be marked as resolved. Thanks for you efforts to help along the way.
