User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021213 See http://www.mindspring.com/~noelann/test.html (most dramatic, 19000 OPTIONS in SELECT) and http://www.mindspring.com/~noelann/test1.html (only 10000 OPTIONS in SELECT). Mouse scrolling is slow for test.html and unusable for test1.html. Keyboard scrolling (typing in Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to http://www.mindspring.com/~noelann/test.html 2. Click on form arrow. 3. Wait for drop-down list to display. 4. Quickly drag scroll "handle" halfway down 5. Wait for display to catch up 6. Drag up and down to repeat Actual Results: There was a long pause (multiple seconds) before rendering the proper portion of the list. During this pause i could not click on other elements with my mouse (such as switching to another workspace in KDE). Expected Results: Scrolling should have nearly instantaneous feedback. Happens in both Modern and Classic themes. Also tested with: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130

yes, the performance is not great, but is 10k options really practical? also, with a CVS gtk2 build, scrolling is lightning fast, even on test.html
Instantaneous for me as well, on 2002121308.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3b) Gecko/20030119 One my machine it takes about 2500-5000 options to make the select barely usable (with BugAThon, a Bug list, and this page in the other tabs). PII400 192MB RAM comparison: Konqueror (KDE 3.1rc5) was able to show a quarter of a million options after you click the drop down button in ~20s. At a half a million options it took almost a minute to show the select. Besides the loading time both were very usable.
For comparison: this work pretty well on Mac OS X 10.2.8, even on a slow 300 MHz iBook without video acceleration. The drop-down lasted 3 seconds, but scrolling was fast enough, with an occasional 'hickup' of maybe 0.2 second (seem like context switching, or maybe the GC). I don't see the need to try to optimize this further, especially for borderline cases like this one.
