Message counts shown in the Folder pane are inconsistent

Updated to v115.2.3 from v102
opensuse tumbleweed 20230921
linux 6.5.4
Actual results:
The count of new messages next to a top level folder name is shown when the folder is collapsed. After expanding the folder, sometimes there is no indication of where the new messages are. Selecting "Get Messages" does not remediate.
Expected results:
I expected that the new message count(s) to appear next to the subfolder(s) where the new messages exist.
I found part of the problem. TB, at some point, deselected the "When getting messages for this account, ..." property for most of the tens of subfolders I have in an account. This means that there is no way to know a folder has new messages until it is visited. It also means I had to select that property (yet again, not the first time this has happened) by opening Properties individually for single folder.
Needing to visit folders also applies to the total count of messages in a folder or account. To get an accurate count, each and every folder must be visited.

I don't know how that happened, but without clues we can't do much here.

It is an issue that was worse in much earlier versions of TB (say v17). I may have even submitted a defect report about it, oh! so long ago. It was never resolved. (Ah! Here it is: 855751 from 2013)
I do not much care about that. It the new mail count issue I am reporting that bothers me.
To expand on this message count issue...
The Account name shows there a X new messages. (Which is good since it is the only one that is consistently updated.) I expand the account show its folders. Some folders show a new message count, many do not. Often, though, the displayed counts do not add to what the top level shows. Then I must start visiting individual folders until I find the one(s) that have the new messages.
If the folder property "When getting messages for this account, always check this folder" is not checked, the parent folder does not show that a new message is available in some sub-folder. The folder's name with the new message(s) is not made bold, either.
Overall this inconsistency makes it possible to miss new messages unless I manually visit every folder periodically.
