Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/118.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Select a main language in Firefox (German for me), do not select any alternative language.
  2. Select multiple prefered languages for website presentation (in my case German (de), English (en)).
  3. (optionally) download some languages for offline translation (English for example in my case)
  4. Open a website in a language that is not in the main language (English for me)

Actual results:

The button for translations is not shown, therefor translation is not possible

Expected results:

Allow translations also for perfered languages

If the website language is not in the list of prefered languages and a tab is currently open, where translation is offered, a reload of the tab will make the translation-icon disappear (after the language was added as a prefered language)

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Translation' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi twistiosplayer, thanks for filing this!

As of right now, it is intended behavior that translations are not offered for pages that correspond to a user's web preferred languages.

The assumption here is that users who have manually added web preferred languages likely already speak that language and won't need it translated.

This does not, however, mean that Translations is entirely inaccessible. It just means that the icon will not appear automatically.

To open the Translations panel you can use the application menu (the three-line hamburger-style menu icon) at the top-right of the browser UI.

There should be an option for "Translate page..." in English or "Seite übersetzen..." in German.

For the moment, I am going to close this bug as WONTFIX because this is intended behavior at this time. But I really appreciate you taking the time to file this. Bugs like this help us make informed decisions about potential changes to behavior in the future and/or what can be communicated more clearly to users.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any further questions or comments.

I think the icon should still appear but the popup for translation should not be shown so it is easily accessible.
For me it was not clear that this behavior is intended, especially as there was no hint that prefered languages are handled differently.
It confused me that the icon was not shown and it was not stated, that the translation is also accessible via the hamburger-menu.
