Steps to reproduce:

Using version 115.3.1 (64-bit) on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
In the unified inbox message list I delete a message that is part of a thread.

Actual results:

The message is always deleted as intended, but sometimes a new blank message dated 1/1/1970 appears in the thread.

This problem only appears in the unified inbox message list, and only when a message is part of a thread. The problem does not appear when deleting a message in the inbox of a single account, nor if the message is not part of a thread.

If the blank message is on the screen, switching to a single account inbox and back to the unified inbox makes the blank message dissappear.

This problem did not happen with 102.x

Expected results:

The blank message should not appear.

Confirming this. The same in 115.6.1

Some addition from my side:

Sometimes such emails appear when just launching Thunderbird (no need to delete anything). In such case switching to a specific account and back does not help.

maurice, tomas.stan, does this still happen with version 115.9?

Fixed for me in 115.9. Thank you.

Just wanted to say it's fixed for me as well, and on this event got the same "ghost" email with "1970-01-01" in the list. So no, while it's much less often, it still happens.

In my case I'm on mobile internet, with the online switching on and off, and also delete mails on mobile phone. Maybe this is something related with the email sync?

Not sure if this also helps, but such email remains between others even if sorted by time. For example, currently I see this ghost 1970 just between other two emails from yesterday, and not at the end of the list.

To be fair, this is the first time I experience this on 115.9, while it was almost a norm in previous versions.

An example of the ghost email in 115.9.0

Some questions:

  1. Does the ghost message vanish (or revert to an ordinary one) if you select another folder and come back?
  2. Did you experience this solely in unified folders?
  3. Is there any connection to Grouped-By views?

To be fair, this is the first time I experience this on 115.9, while it was almost a norm in previous versions.

There may very well be several causes for this, dating back quite some time, see the main bug 209501.

One issue also touched in bug 646168 was that newly received messages temporarily appeared duplicated in the view. Deleting one of them produced a ghost message. At least this should be fixed by now.

tomas.stan, one further question, do you use POP3 or IMAP for your accounts, or both?

IMAP only (using default Google settings. All accounts are Gmail).

Sorry, missed this email somehow:

Yes, it disappears

  1. Did you experience this solely in unified folders?

Yes. I have Unified inbox and have never seen anything similiar in other places.

  1. Is there any connection to Grouped-By views?

I have Enabled Grouped by sort and Sort by Date. Haven't tried other configurations for so long.

It's pretty usable after recent changes, and it happened 2-3 times in last 2 weeks only, so a bit tricky to replicate and identify what was happening at that moment. ;) . But i'd share any info, if notice any pattern.
Thanks for the involvement!

tomas.stan, one further question, do you use POP3 or IMAP for your accounts, or both?

On those words, it happened :).. And it looks to be related with several emails I deleted (some of them I moved from Junk to Inbox just before of that). So sounds like the bug 209501
