User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/118.0

Steps to reproduce:

Hit a download that is deemed by Firefox as 'odd' and close the browser without authorizing the file download.

Actual results:

After every Firefox startup, the odd file warning will keep popping up but without being able to authorize the download. It is stuck forever in the download history. No matter if you delete the file or the complete download history, after the next startup it'll be there.

Expected results:

Depends on service level but I believe it would be easiest to allow deleting the file from the history so it will not pop up again. The user can re-initiate the download if required.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Downloads Panel' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Downloads Panel

If you click on the download and select Remove File does it go away?
Does the file exist in the Downloads folder?
Could you please share either the link to the file to be downloaded, and/or a screenshot/video of the panel while you try to remove the download?

As a workaround while we investigate, the download should go away if you remove downloads.json from the profile folder (you can reach the profile folder from about:support)

Hey Marco,

q: If you click on the download and select Remove File does it go away?
a: No, it persists

q: Does the file exist in the Downloads folder?
a: I've deleted it before as part of the troubleshooting, but a 'part' file was there. (don't know the tech savvy name for it, you see the exact behaviour while the browser is streaming a file and you look at the download in an unfinished state)

q: Could you please share either the link to the file to be downloaded
a: The file in question was a redmod extension: https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/4198?tab=files&file_id=51548
Since an account is required, maybe try your luck with downloading an arbitrary zip file with this name (identical with the link) 'ArchiveXL-4198-1-7-0-1696670721.zip'

As a side info, I've managed to come around the problem by re-downloading the exact same file and then deleting it. (both from hard drive and the download history) It solved the problem but I expect that's not the desired behaviour.

I didn't manage to reproduce your issue in the latest Nightly 120.0a1 (2023-10-19) and Firefox 118.0.2 versions on Windows 10 x64.
Does this issue occur to you in Troubleshoot mode or using a new profile?

Ok so, by "odd" download I assume it's an "uncommon" warning (as shown on http://testsafebrowsing.appspot.com).
Downloading that I get a blocked file notification, while in the downloads folder I see unknown.exe as zero-byte file and Xu-rfNqB.exe.part.

I tried:

  • close Firefox, delete the zero-byte unknown.exe, reopen Firefox, remove the download.
  • delete the file immediately, then unblock the download.
  • delete the file, close firefox, reopen Firefox, then unblock.
    All of these worked.

The only case where I can reproduce a similar problem is if I:

  • close Firefox, remove the .part file (or both), launch Firefox.

Then effectively the download keeps showing as blocked on each susequent Firefox startup and there's no way to remove it, there's also no sub panel with options to do anything.
This is effectively a bad situation we should avoid, if nor the file nor the .part file, we should just unblock the download as there's nothing to block.

Though, I still cannot reproduce the original situation where a download cannot be unblocked nor removed without touching files... I wonder if there was some interference by an Antivirus holding some file in use.

I think we should start fixing the problem of un-removable downloads if the .part is missing.

Summary: Odd download stuck in history → Uncommon download can't be unblocked nor removed if .part is missing

I can't reproduce it the original way after the most recent Firefox upgrade either, but thanks for taking the time trial&erroring it. I'm a zero-day Firefox user since the very beginning, I'm very happy I could contribute to the project.

This is definitely still an issue. Every time I open Firefox it warns me about a file I once tried to download.

  1. As expected, Troubleshooting mode doesn't make any difference
  2. I've grepped (Windows equivalent) for the file name in AppData to find the entry and cannot find it
  3. It's not in the registry either.

Is the only option to uninstall the app and reinstall?
