While looking at the about:support on another bug ( https://bug1856179.bmoattachments.org/attachment.cgi?id=9355995 ), Firefox helpfully offered to translate it from German to English, doing so has just been spinning for several minutes and my laptop fans turned on, Intel Tigerlake GT2 GPU is showing 50% utilization.
Note that I have forced software WebRender with a pref (gfx.webrender.software = true).

Setting gfx.webrender.software back to false, the linked about:support page on that bug translates near-instantly.
So translations may be making assumptions about WebRender talking to D3D?

This is strange, translations should have nothing to do with the graphics backend!

If you set it back to true can you still reproduce the problem?

Can't repro anymore, so I wonder if it was just a broken version of Firefox Nightly and more recent updates fixed it, which means it probably has nothing to do with gfx?

I'm marking as "works for me", feel free to reopen if it starts reproducing again.
