Confirming same bug on my system with WinXP. Have tried several themes,
including XP and classic themes.

Additionally Back, Forward, Reload and Stop buttons have adifferently colored
box surrounding them. (Reload and Stop have no text label)

profile).

I think this should be put in the release notes (that the print button might be
corrupted if an old profile is used). However since many people DO want to use
their old profiles, we need a fix IMO. Thus, I change the priority to "normal".
Severity: trivial → normal
after some further investigation, I found out that the following worked for me:
* choose View/Skins/Modern Skin
* restart browser
* choose View/Skins/Classic Skin
* restart browser

now, the print button looks ok. Unfortunately I forgot to save my prefs before
doing that, so I cannot say what was changed to cure this phenenomen. Could
anyone of the others who experience this bug try my workaround and monitor which
settings are changed in the configuration files? Then we could make a patch or
put something in the release notes.
Bug confirmed in 1.5rc2 on XP Pro SP1.

Your workaround also solved the problem for my installation (though
you must be using a different version of the software, because my
menus had this under View/Apply Theme).

Here's a diff for prefs.js (this is one of those cases where a context
diff is less useful than the bare-bones flavor):

40a41
> user_pref("general.skins.selectedSkin", "modern/1.0");
125a127
> user_pref("mailnews.quotingPrefs.version", 1);
127c129,130
< user_pref("mailnews.ui.threadpane.version", 2);
---
> user_pref("mailnews.ui.junk.firstuse", false);
> user_pref("mailnews.ui.threadpane.version", 3);

I assume prefs.js is what you're looking for.  As a lowly user I didn't
get a lot of assistance from the online help (for example, entering
"preferences" in the search panel didn't come up with any topics that
were relevant).
I just noticed one odd side effect of your workaround. Now the
option to show both pictures and text on the toolbar is ignored.

I had this same problem too, perhaps it was a remnant of Netscape 7.1 being on
my system. After I changed the theme back to Classic, restarted, and then set it
back to Modern it was fixed.
Noticed that my profile did not have a particular theme highlighted before I
switched to Classic and back to Modern to fix the problem with print button.
This fixed my problem, but couldn't a solution to this problem be to prompt the
user if a theme isn't chosen when installing mozilla?
has this happened to anyone with FF or thunderbird?
or is it only with the suite?

Not me. I have used every version of FF since .7 up (currently 1.5.0.1). I never had this bug and occasionally I did have to start a brand new profile. I suggest it is now FIXED but I'll leave it as NEW.

The only situation I might expect this bug to still occur would be a user with both Mozilla and Firefox installed using the same profile - a crossover bug. Is that even possible anymore?

I have no experience with Thunderbird.

This bug has no patch, so it can't correctly be marked as fixed.

I doubt the root cause is fixed, given that I encountered this after having installed seamonkey in the last couple months. (Unless it's a profile sharing/user error - which I doubt but I have yet to check) Before installing seamonkey, netscape had been in use.
