New article

Please provide a summary of the request. [REQUIRED]

In bug 1848319, we requested updates to the resistFingerprinting page.

We'd like to bring some of the content and extra detail that we removed back, so that we can support users who are using this unsupported pref. And we'd like to do this with an extra page.

The team created a draft article here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IzpPpIsx3GSDaYdMXfc2__VJ4WzPVXC3JO293_hNK3E/edit

This includes the outline and things we think should be covered, but needs support in writing and tone.

Is this an on- or off-train release? Please indicate the product version number, if applicable and add to the Summary field using the format of [Product V123]. [REQUIRED]

This is not a newly released feature. The old article seems to date back to Fx 102.

What is the anticipated release date? [REQUIRED]

No urgent timeline, but would be appreciated if we can release it in 2023.

Does the content need to be published prior to the release date? If so, when? [REQUIRED]

No

Does the content need to be localized in any languages outside of EN-US? If yes, please indicate which languages. [REQUIRED]

No.

Please include any related JIRA/Github/Bugzilla tickets, documentation, demos or practical use cases. [REQUIRED]

See previous article, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-protection-against-fingerprinting#firefox:mac:fx117

Please include links to any design assets, visuals, figma files, etc. [REQUIRED]

This is mainly a pref in about:config

Please add instructions for testing that will enable us to replicate the expected product behavior. [REQUIRED]

  1. Type about:config in the address bar and press Return.
  2. Accept the risk
  3. Search for privacy.resistFingerprinting and set it to true.

Does the content need approval prior to publishing? If so, by who? [REQUIRED]

No.

Please can I pick this one up?

I actually started an email about this last week to see if I could get traction; if there is some momentum, I can circle back and provide some guidance if you're interested, but I don't want to see your effort wasted so I wouldn't start anything right away.

Hey Lucas! I see you closed bug 1862180 as duplicate of this bug and attached a draft. Please know that the two bugs are different, and the draft you attached fits the closed bug better.

For context: Bug 1862180 refers to our new, user facing fingerprinting protection settings. Bug 1862173 on the other hand focuses on the (unsupported) resistFingerprinting pref. We experience again and again that our users activate this pref, intentionally or unintentionally (e.g. through extensions or projects like arkenfox), and then run into issues. We'd like to have a page that we can point them to, so they can learn about the pref and how to troubleshoot their issues.

No longer duplicate of this bug: 1862180
