User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/119.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Manage bookmarks [Ctrl+Shift+O] / Import and Backup... / Backup...
  2. Choose a read only directory
  3. Save

Actual results:

No file within the read only directory.
No error message mentioning a failed operation.

Expected results:

An error message (or whatever) about the failed operation.

The same issue for Export Bookmarks to HTML...

Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Bookmarks & History

It looks like we just print an error to the Browser Console.

Severity: -- → S3
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Keywords: dataloss
Priority: -- → P3

We should at least show an Error Dialog with the failure reason, at least differenciate between filesystem issues VS Firefox problems with reading bookmarks.

Managed to reproduce this issue on Firefox 119.0.1, Firefox 120.0b8 and Nightly 121.0a1 on Ubuntu 22.
Since this bug is already set as NEW, I’m going to update the status flags.
