BBC News has updated their website https://www.bbc.com/news but the favicon no longer shows in the tab in Firefox, it does show as expect in Chrome though (screenshots attached)

it works for me... Tested Nightly on Windows 11.
Have you tried clearing your cache on BBC?

Updated Nightly, cleared everything and even reset Firefox and I can still repro but it has to do with the new BBC News website. When you go the website, do you see this overlay/popup about the new website?

Nope, I see a "Help us improve" popup.
Maybe they're running some sort of A/B testing...

I was able to reproduce this (I'm in North America), and it looks like the BBC might be linking to a broken image (https://www.bbc.com/favicon-16x16.png).

Chrome appears to be falling back to the root favicon at favicon.ico. We should probably do something similar, and that's tracked by https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1860821.

So there are ultimately two issues here:

  1. The BBC website is linking to broken favicon images (both the 32px an 16px variants are 404s)
  2. Firefox needs to be able to fallback to the root favicon, which is something we aim to do in bug 1860821.
Component: Tabbed Browser → Desktop

Product: Firefox → Web Compatibility

I think https://www.politico.com/ might have this same issue as the new BBC News website? I don't see a favicon in Firefox but I do in Chrome

politico.com bug is different, see bug 1722618.
Unfortunately, because there's no spec around favicons, there's a lot of broken edge-cases.

Verified this issue and could not reproduce it on Firefox versions 123 and 125.

If the reporter can confirm that the issue reproduces in a new profile, we will gladly re-open the issue.

Tested with:

Browser / Version: Firefox Release 123.0 (64-bit)/ Firefox Nightly 125.0a1 (2024-02-26) (64-bit)/ Chrome Version 122.0.6261.70 (Official Build)
Operating System: Windows 10 PRO x64

I also noticed the same issue with https://www.theinformation.com/ . Would that be 1860821 or 1722618?

The last favicon on the page "https://www.theinformation.com/favicon_prod/favicon.svg" is a NOT FOUND 404, though the other icons exist.
I think that's Bug 1860821.
