User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/119.0
Firefox for Android

Steps to reproduce:

The Mandaic script is not legible at all on Firefox. Here is an example of a sample text in Mandaic on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandaic_language

Try the link above on Chrome and Safari to see the vast difference in legibility.

Actual results:

I cannot read the text in Mandaic on Firefox at all as the letters are scrambled. I attached an image file below, so you can see the difference between Firefox and Chrome.

This bug occurs on Mac OS and iOS. I don't have an Android phone or Windows computer to test this on, but I'm certain I would have the same issues.

Expected results:

The Mandaic script should be properly displayed like the Chrome example in the attached file.

The Mandaic script is already installed on my computer, and it comes preinstalled with iOS as well. Uploading a custom font on a website and using the font-face rule in CSS fixes the problem. I created a Github repo with a webfont version of the Mandaic script, so you can see the issue in more details. The link for the Github repo is below:

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::DOM: Core & HTML' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → DOM: Core & HTML
Product: Firefox → Core
Component: DOM: Core & HTML → Layout: Text and Fonts

For what it is worth, on Firefox 121 on MacOS for me the text on Wikipedia looks like the text in the Chrome part of the PDF. Hopefully somebody more familiar with fonts will be able to figure out what is going wrong for you.

The Mandaic script is already installed on my computer,

Do you mean that you have installed the Noto Sans Mandaic font in your ~/Library/Fonts folder on macOS? If so, that may be conflicting with the copy that is preinstalled in the operating system. (This would be an example of bug 1803406.) Try uninstalling your local copy, and that may solve the issue with displaying the text in Firefox.

You're correct! I installed the Noto Sans Mandaic font in the ~/Libraryy/Fonts directory on Mac OS. I removed it from my computer and it's working properly now. Thank you for your help.

The reply from Jonathan below fixed my issue with the font display. I still believe it's worth looking at the bug he mentioned in his reply :)

:TYLin, could you have a look please?
