Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/119.0

Steps to reproduce:

The problem appeared probably since my system got an update to Thunderbird 115 (currently 115.4.1).

This is the problem: When I move messages from the Inbox or from a search folder to a local folder (or just by clicking to view a search folder), sometimes it happens that all messages in the target folder get duplicated. If they were duplicated before, they are dupliacted again.

This happens not always. It is like once a day. Depends how much I work with viewing and sorting mails. I could not find any bug report that describes this strange behaviour.

My workaround is - when I detect those duplicated messages - to use the Remove Duplicates Extension to get rid of the duplicates quickly. Still, I am concerned about this annoying behaviour.

Operating System: Kubuntu 22.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.7
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.92.0
Qt Version: 5.15.3
Kernel Version: 5.15.0-56-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz
Memory: 7,6 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 520

Today, the first case appeared, where removing the duplicates caused one folder to have all messages cleared :(.

Is there a way to reset Thunderbird somehow while keeping the folder structure?

I found out, that a message which is displayed two (or more) times has only one representation in the mailbox file. I check this by searching the subject and found only one occurrence.

Maybe a caching problem?

I used this https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database to delete the global message database. But this did not help. The affected messages are still displayed duplicate.

Summary: Thunderbird regularly duplicates all messages in some of my local folders under unknown conditions → Thunderbird regularly shows duplicates of all/some messages in some of my local folders under unknown conditions

I found a workaround: The problem (at its first stage, when first the duplicate messages appear) can be solved by using the right click -> properties -> Repair button. When I observe the message count, I see that the number of total messages in the affected folder is cut in half after clicking the Button.

When it comes to the second stage (interacting with the folder in some way manifested the duplicates in the mailbox file; so now the duplicates are "real"), then the "Remove duplicates" extension can help to find and delete the duplicates.

I now have Repair-clicked most of my folders and will observe if the duplicates will show again.

Bug is still there with 115.8.1

Summary: Thunderbird regularly shows duplicates of all/some messages in some of my local folders under unknown conditions → Thunderbird virtually duplicates all messages of a folder after a mail was manually moved into it (happens not with all folders and only once per session)

Reporter,
Are you seeing this also with version 115.9.0 or newer?

Whiteboard: [closeme 2024-04-15]

Yes. I have 115.9.0 installed and today the duplication happened again.

The problem still occurs on a daily basis.

I would like to add, that the duplicate (or triple or more depending on how soon I repair the affected folder) messages are also shown in "Saved search" folders.

Updated to 115.10.1, problem persists.

Whiteboard: [closeme 2024-04-15]

With 115.11.0 I see a variation of the problem. At least with two folders. No duplicates are shown in the folder itself, but when I "Open Message in Conversation" then in the new view, messages are shown duplicated.

When I delete one of the duplicated message, both are gone. Then I use "Undo delete message". After that, only one message remains when "Open Message in Conversation" is invoked again.

Still seeing it on 115.12.0

Does it happen with Thunderbird started in Help > Troubleshoot Mode?
With version 128?
Only with local folder, not when moved to another imap folder?

Hello Wayne, sorry for the late reply. I saw your response just now.

I tried with Troubleshoot mode (115.16.0esr). There were duplicates probably from the previous session. I removed them by using the Repair button. I worked a bit (40 minutes, wrote and moved 15 emails) and the there were no more duplicates. Since the problem occurs not immediately, it is too early to say, if it works or not.

As soon as 128 is available on my system, I will try.

It happens only in local folders. IMAP folders never showed duplicates so far.

I recently updated to Kubuntu 24.04 with TB 128.6.0esr (64-bit).
Duplication of new mails could to be fixed. Not sure yet.
In "Open in > Conversations" there are still duplicates. But those are not "realized" when I open the corresponding folder.

Are you able to confirm now?

I have now 128.11.0esr (64-bit) and since weeks (and probably even with 128.6.0esr) the ill-behaviour does not occur with new mails anymore. Thanks for fixing.

Can this ticket be closed, then?

Thanks for testing.
