Yes - a master password is set.
Yesterday, I was tyring a work-around: deletion of Thunderbird 121.01a and manual installation of 122.01a. It tdid not work. Then trying to revert back to 121.01a of 27.10.2023 it brought the message, that the profile had been changed by a newer version and that it was incompatable.
Thank you for pointing me to bug 1866098
I compared the indications - and most of them fit.
I now deactivated the master password and the update went through perfectly.
After that re-activated the master password.
Luckily the mac timemachine enabled a restoration of the profile.
I guess this bug is still open?
Thanks for the support

So you're saying on daily it's working fine even with master password enabled?
