Steps to reproduce:
set sorting to not grouped, wait a while, maybe restart thunderbird, at some point sorting will revert back to grouped
Actual results:
set sorting to not grouped, wait a while, maybe restart thunderbird, at some point sorting will revert back to grouped -> emails disappear bc grouped into "older" threads that are no longer in visible part of window...
Expected results:
first of all, default sorting should NEVER be grouped bc new messages disappear bc they are response to messages that were sent maybe a day or week ago and no longer are visible.
second of all after changing it to non grouped <- THIS change should never be reverted without explicit wish bc -> look at point 1)
I cannot stress enough how bad this is: emails arrived and disappear under threads of old emails. Not usuable. keeps on reverting back to sorted, so, recurring problem
It looks like you are talking about 'Sort by' > 'Threaded' and 'Unthreaded'
When you set that manually View > Sort by > Threaded
That will only apply to whatever folder was selected at the time. eg: Inbox
You would need to then set that up for all other folders. Look at the link below in Support Forum on how to do it.
In addition, for some unknown reason this 'threaded' view got set as default and for some people it only effects new folders and for other it has caused lots of confusion because it got applied to every folder. It has caused no end of problems for some people.
This means you would need to alter the Preferences via Config Editor to stop threading being applied to all new folders. You may also want to set 'descending' up as default as well.
Take a look at this link as it mentions several things to do with setting defaults.

If preferences are not being saved between startups of Thunderbird then it's possible certain files are not getting properly updated or they maybe being deleted by programs on your computer, such as Anti-Virus or other cleanup programs like CCleaner or WiseCleaner.
Advise you do not allow cleanup programs to access your Thunderbird profile folders because they cause havoc. Make Thunderbird exempt from scanning, so files like session data cannot be removed.
Do you use CCleaner Or WiseCleaner or even some Anti-Virus products can clean up files ?
Have you made Thunderbird profile folders exempt from scanning?
Did setting up defaults in preferences and blocking access improve situation ?

use defender only, no other products
no new folder either
always the same top level folder, it had already changed back to grouped on its own a few times, today again
I though I'd be able to reproduce bc it seemed to happen after deleting a mail with SHITF+DEL, but just did that with a mail again and this time it didn't revert back to grouped...
so not sure why.
I did the mailnews.default_view_flags 0 thing and will keep an eye on it (have to anyway, otherwise I miss important mails)
