Steps to reproduce:
Entered signatures and their settings for my various mailboxes.
For local folders you can choose to add a signature in the settings and where and how like for any other account, but you can't enter one like in the settings for real mailbox or choose from which mailbox settings a signature may be chosen from.
============
So it is not possible to automatically add a signature when replying on an email you filtered/sorted to a local folder.
(Workaround: copied the mail to another real smailbox, clicked "reply" there.)
Actual results:
As no signature can be entered or chosen, the setting to insert one is ignored.
Expected results:
There should be a text box for a signature for local folders like for other mailboxes
or
it should be possible to select from which (stand) mailbox the signature has to be taken for replies on mails from your local folders.
Something isn't configured correctly. The signature is linked to the identity or account. When you answer an e-mail from a local folder, the identity that received the e-mail is chosen for reply and its signature is used. If a suitable identity cannot be determined, TB will use the default identity of the default account for reply. So if all accounts and identities have signatures, some signature will always be used. You can also switch identities in the Write/compose window. That will also place a signature if the identity you're switching to has one.
I recognized that last night - thanks for clarifying why: it works, but only half the way it should/could.
Having my own domain, working as a freelancer, my customers have personalized email addresses
like bugzilla@example.org.
That's an additional help for me to filter real mails from spam and into a partner's subfolder and keep thing as tidy as possible.
All these email addresses are given to them ad hoc, i.e. I don't create an inbox for that or define them in my provider's web interface,
but simply let them drop in and move them into my catch-all (i.e. webmaster@) mailbox.
When I get a mail to my personal address or my webmaster@ directly and move them into local folders,
I can replay with the automated signature as you describe.
If an address is new ... let's say TB_v115_2023@example.org ... it is shoveled into my Mozilla subfolder in local folders (due to @mozilla. or @thunderbird in one of the address fields/my filter). Answering to this one will not generate a signature as there is no TB_v115_0223 mailbox.
Conclusion: This is no bug anymore, it now is a feature request.
Answering to this one will not generate a signature as there is no TB_v115_0223 mailbox.
This is still not clear. When you answer, TB will use an identity and its configuration to send the answer from. Either configure that (default?) identity to have a signature or switch the From to an identity that has a signature.
ok, next try:
1a. The notification of your comment here was send to bugzilla.mozilla@<mydomain> and since I did not define this email address in my provider's interface it was move to my default catch-all mailbox "webmaster@<mydomain>.
1b. The was downloaded (POP3) to my webmaster inbox at sync and, as there is no active filter for bugzilla mails, stayed there.
1c. Clicking on "reply" automatically uses the corresponding identity and inserts the defined signature of webmaster@<mydomain>.
2a. Another mail from I received from freelance.de (a contract protal service) has been send to "freelance.de@<mdomain.de>", another address I never defined in the provider's settings, moved to catch-all=>webmaster inbox.
2b. There is an active filter for mails from freelance.de moving them from my webmaster inbox into a contractor subfolder in "local folders".
2c. Clicking on reply for the filtered mail in local folders will also choose webmaster@<mydomain> as identity but does not insert its defined signature.
Nah, that is an issue.
Additionally, there is no way to add a signature manually, like - I hate to say it - in Outlook, where you can attach any defined signature from the main menu.
There is a very popular add-on, https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/signature-switch/, which allows management of signatures, including placing and removing them.
