User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:121.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/121.0

Steps to reproduce:

I browsed back to about:newtab using the "Back" button after visiting more than one Web page. (This error consistently occurs after visiting more than one page, but hasn't occured when visiting only one Web page.)

Actual results:

A brief flash of the about:newtab settings sidesheet was displayed and then disappeared. Error occurs at 00:23 in the attached video recording "aboutnewtab_settings_flash.mov" and settings sidesheet shown in "aboutnewtab_settings_sidesheet.png"

Expected results:

The about:newtab settings sidesheet should remain hidden.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::New Tab Page' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

aboutnewtab settings sidesheet flash example

The flash of the settings sidesheet occurs at 00:12 in the video. (My original problem description lists an incorrect timestamp of 00:23 because my original, longer version of this video clip was rejected due to its size.)

I could not reproduce the issue on Mac14 using FF build 121.0. (I used Mac14 as I do not have Mac 10.15).
Ben, does the problem still happen if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? (Safe Mode disables add-ons, extensions and themes, hardware acceleration and some JavaScript stuff in order to exclude some possible reasons for problems.) See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode ? Thank you.

Hi, Monica: The problem does occur in Safe Mode as well. (I've just attached a new recording named "aboutnewtab_settings_safemode.mov".) FWIW, I'm on Firefox 121.0 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2015) running macOS 12.7.2. Thanks!
