Apparently changes have recently been made to the email notification system that is interfering with the screen reader. As soon as I receive a notification about a new e-mail, the focus is set somewhere else. It doesn't matter which application I'm in. It seems as if the notification window fades into the background. I particularly notice this when I am surfing the Internet or when I am directly in Thunderbird.
I can reproduce this behaviour with both JAWS and NVDA since the daily build of 21 December 2023.
Steps to reproduce
This behaviour can also be reproduced in other applications, but it is easier to reproduce it in the message list.
- Open Thunderbird and focus the message list.
- Use the arrow keys to navigate through the messages while waiting for a new incoming email.
Result
The message list loses focus and it is no longer possible to navigate in the message list. JAWS then reads something like "chrome://messenger/content/newmailalert.xhtml". NVDA, on the other hand, didn't say anything. It looked like an empty window. Once the window has disappeared again, you can navigate normally again.
Expected
It should be possible to navigate in the message list or work in another application as before, even when a notification of a new e-mail arrives.

I need to test and confirm this bug and triage it.
Short addendum: in the meantime I was able to find out that the window with the title "chrome://messenger/content/newmailalert.xhtml" is a window that appears in the foreground. While this is still appearing, I can switch between Thunderbird and this window with ALT+TAB. In the previous builds this window was "hidden" and not focusable.

Thanks for the update, Ali. I haven't been able to get to this yet. Is the workaround working for you right now so that you can still navigate the message list? Thank you!
If I press ALT+TAB, I can navigate in the message list again, but the focus jumps away again as soon as the next message appears. So this is not a solution for beginners. Therefore, this should be fixed as soon as possible before this problem is included in a stable version.
This bug seems to have been fixed with version 124.0a1 (2024-02-15).
