Steps to reproduce:

  1. I added a Masterpassword ( in German Hauptpasswort) in my safety settings.

Actual results:

When I open Firefox, now a grey box opens and asks for the password.

The bug and issue is that I can simply click away the box with the cross on the right upper corner. Then I have fully access to Firefox, the passwords, chronic and so on.
So, this function simply fails.

Expected results:

The password box should stay and protect access to Firefox until the password has been entered,

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Toolkit::Password Manager' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Password Manager
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

That's not the functionality it has. It protects access to your passwords, only, not Firefox itself.

Hello Robert,

this is really a pity and not the funcitionality it should have. Or at least, I hoped to find.

The point is simply.
If I want to block someone from using my Firefox, it is someone I most probably know ( family member, co-worker, or my IT consultant ).
It is not someone who intends to steal my passwords, because he has stolen my desktop PC from home.

And here the "Chronic", the history and the bookmarks are the sensitive and delicate informations that I would like to have private and not share.

Which websites had I been on, which Google searches did I make, which websites did I bookmark, have I been on sites with adult content or bookmark those and so on....
THESE are the informations I want to keep private and confidentional, not my passwords ! And I can imagine many people think like me !

So, to create a functionality which protects the complete browser before entering, would be a great help and relief.
All it needs is to let the password stay and block the browser till the password is entered.
Would be really great if Firefox could this option.
Thanks
Carlos

If you want to protect your PC, you need to set an operating system password and have a timeout so your screen locks after a short while.

Thanks for coming back to me. I do not want to protect my PC, why should I ?
I want to protect my browser from unwanted access to see my chronic, searches and bookmarks!

So, that I do not have to watch carefully to do everything private in private mode or delete the chronic each time and make no bookmarks.
This would provide me a big freedom and relief.

And it would be soo simple to realize for you!

Is this need so extraordinary or difficult to comprehend?

Well, as you can see, others have exactly the same wish!
So, why dont you simply add this function and have even an unique selling point for Firefox above others?
Thanks for your time and have a Merry Christmas!
