User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:121.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/121.0

Steps to reproduce:

  • open a new compose window (e.g., reply or new message)
  • select "Customize From Address..." from the drop down list that opens when you click on the ⌄ (downward caret) in the "From" text field. Do not enter a from address.
  • Move focus away from this drop down element, e.g., by clicking into the message pane.
  • again, select "Customize From Address...". It's impossible as it is greyed out.

Actual results:

User can not select "Customized From Address..." again after it has been selected before.

Expected results:

User should be able to select any of the available options in the drop down element of inside the "From" field any time.

Maybe a misunderstanding: Once "Customize From Address..." was chosen, you remain in that state. So if you move focus, then return, you can still change/customize the from address. It's debatable if the state should be reset once you switch to a different identity (if you have multiple).

Thanks for taking the time to file a bug!

As Francesco says, this seems to work as intended (as clicking this option once sets the field in the "custom address" mode). However, I agree that this UX, even though it's on purpose, is likely confusing for must users (I would probably also have gotten caught by it).

Thanks for the note. I agree, it's a misunderstanding on my side. The behavior is exactly as you described and the "Customize From Address..." works as expected. I can edit the From address after clicking it once, however, as it was greyed out then I did not even try to enter anything manually in the "From:" field as I thought this function to be disabled.
