Details

Steps to reproduce:

I searching some term in the upper bar of Th 115.7.

Actual results:

Only the messages from Sent are listed for some searching terms
Quick filter works fine.

Expected results:

Messages from all folders should be listed.

All folder should be indexed for all terms.

Did you ask this question in the Thunderbird Support Forum to see if it could be resolved ?
If yes, post a link to that question and I'll take a look.

Regarding Searching Terms etc more info here:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/global-search

Please Verify:
Are all your folders selected to be included in the Global Search - (the search in 'Unified Toolbar' )?

  • Right click on folder(s) and select 'Properties'
  • Is this checkbox selected 'Include messages in this folder in Global Search results' ?

Did you perform a rebuild of the global search database to see any corruption exists in that file?
If no:
then please use the info at the following link to find out whether problem is due to that file or not.

I am sorry for the lack of details of my report.

Yes, the global search was active.
Yes, 'Include messages in this folder in Global Search results' was selected.
Yes, I rebuild the index several times to be sure for all the concerned folders.

Example:
I global searches for "toto@example.com" (address of messages from a receiver).
Only my sent messages are shown. All the messages from all the indexed folders should be shown.
But with the quick filter, all the messages from toto@example.com are shown from the selected input folder.

If it is not a bug, it is a lack of performance, I think.

Thank you for your answer. I will try a global rebuild as https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database and report here the results.

Regards.

Applying the method of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database fix the issue. Thank you.
But it is a workaround. I think that searching with Thunderbird is weak.

I must say that I have more than 10000 messages and the sqlite database was 150MB sized, now 250 MB.

(In reply to rpnpif from comment #4)

I must say that I have more than 10000 messages and the sqlite database was 150MB sized, now 250 MB.

Maybe the original global database did not have a complete record hence poor search results and now it does.

Please remember to frequently manually compact folders that get regular deletions or moves of emails such as Inbox, Drafts and Spam/Junk.
This performs a type of housekeeping on the mbox files that store emails, thus removing all old traces of deleted emails or emails that have been moved to other folders. It keeps the file size under better control, reduces risks of corruption etc.

Rebuilding the global database is not a workaround it's the normal method used when it has a major issue. eg: Search showing mails that have been deleted or not being able to search accurately as in your case. It means the database was out of synch with stored emails and this could have occured for a number of reasons.

If you have an Anti-Virus product or cleanup products like CCleaner o rWiseCleaner which can scan Thunderbird profile folder then I would advise you make your profile folder exempt from scanning as attempts to 'fix' files or clean up files like session files can cause havoc.

If you have any issues or queries please use the Thunderbird Support Forum as your first port of call to see if someone can help you sort things out. This forum is specifically for bugs in the code and is not a Support forum. I help out to try to identify if there is a bug or whether this is something unique to you which can be sorted out.
