User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:122.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/122.0

Steps to reproduce:

Right-clicked on a folder and selected "Properties".
Selected main-menu item Edit->"Folder Properties".
(Tried with both an empty folder and one w/messages.)

Version: TB 115.7.0, no Extensions, on Windows 10.

Actual results:

Just a title bar popped up with "Folder Properties" on the left and the X/Close button on the right. (Will upload screenshot) Could not re-size into a window.

Note that this also initially happened with Right-Click->"Search Messages" but that title bar included the Minimize/Maximize buttons and I was able to re-size that into a window -- and it remembered that for subsequent openings.

Expected results:

I expected to get a window with property and other settings, or be able to re-size it into something useful.

Experimenting now, was able to right-click in the "Folder Properties" title bar and select "Maximize" to get a full-screen window, but was unable to then either select "Restore" (grayed out) or use the "Size" option to any effect. The "Minimize" item did work, but really wasn't helpful. Was able to select Close to close the window.

Sounds like the size of the window for normal use has been altered to a small size.
This is the sort of question you normally would ask in the Thunderbird Support Forum to see if a simple fix sorts out the issue.
I'm checking to see if this is really a bug or whether you have a file with messed up data.
Sometimes things do not get saved properly if shut down occured prior to file updates or and this is more likely - if another software like Anti-Virus or Cleanup software like CCleaner or Wisecleaner has been allowed to scan profile causing an interference and/or delete session data.
Advise you do not allow those types of products access to profile folders as they can cause havoc.
Make Thunderbird profile folder exempt from being scanned etc by those types of product.

Try this and report back on results.
In Thunderbird

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' - half way down - Profile Folders - click on 'Open Folder'
  • A new window opens showing the contents of your Profile name folder.
  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.
  • In profile folder - locate and delete these two files: 'session.json' and 'xulstore.json'
  • Start Thunderbird
  • those two files will get recreated in profile using defaults, so you may find some things need resetting.

Thanks for the info and walk-through.

  • Tried the file removal and restart as directed: no joy, issue persisted.
  • Don't have anything like CCleaner or Wisecleaner installed.

Following up with info additional to initial reply.

I created a new TB profile and linked it to an email account I use less often. The "Folder Properties" window opened as expected so it seems like the issue I reported is related to a configuration item/issue in my current profile, but not solved by deleting the "session.json" and "xulstore.json" files. I tried copying those files from the new profile to my current and the issue persisted. My current profile has been in use since I started using TB -- way, way back -- and has been through many TB upgrades, so that may be a factor and it's perhaps a weird configuration issue or bug? If there are any ideas, I'm happy to try and track this down in case it's something that may affect others. :-)

Thanks for the info and walk-through.

I just noticed that this title bar only issue also happens when sending mail. I only get the title bar for that progress window. I tried sending mail from the new profile I created (see Comment #4) and that progress window appeared as expected.

Okay, weird. I tried using export/import and got two different behaviors. First I imported my current profile directly into a new one (using Tools-Import) and the issue persisted. Second I exported my current profile to a zip file, then imported that into a new profile and the issue did NOT persist.

Never mind... I figured this out. I was due to a legacy setting (below) in the "userChrome.css" file -- used to reduce the (ridiculous) amount of padding in the menus and UI. Commenting this out resolved the issue and the "Folder Properties" and "Send" (progress) windows appear as expected. My thanks to Anje for looking into this above.
