Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: mail is delivered to a remote imap server. from menu, select edit -> mail and newsgroup account settings. from the dialog, select server settings and click on the "advanced" button. in that dialog, uncheck all "check for new message..." options. Actual Results: mozilla checks to see if new messages are present on the server. Expected Results: mozilla should refrain from checking for new messages.
umm, scratch that "click on advanced button" in steps to reproduce.... :)
reporter, when you say it still checks for new mesgs when does it check? I'm curious what you are doing when 'new mail' appears. If I follow your steps: >uncheck all "check for new message..." options. I ran these scenarios using current commercial trunk: rv:1.3b Gecko/20030113 on Xp and 7.01rtm : rv:1.0.2 Gecko/20030113 on win 2k On a imap account using Nscp mesg server 4.15 1)Check both prefs (check for new msgs at startup, check every x mins), I set mine to 1 min, quit/restarted, logged in After a min passes, I get new mesgs in my inbox for both builds. 2)I uncheck both prefs and from another mail account send a mesg to acnt that has both prefs unchecked. After a min passes, I get new mesgs in my inbox for both builds. probably a bug. there's a bug about needing to quit/restart (in order for pref check x mins to take place) that is affecting this bug, see bug 24594 3) I uncheck both prefs, quit/restart/relogin, from another mail acnt, I send myself a mesg and wait 1 min I don't get new megs in my inbox for both builds 4) Same as step 3 above but I click on another folder than go back to inbox I receive new mesgs in my inbox for both builds. 5) I uncheck both prefs, quit, send a msg from another mail acnt to this tst acnt, restart mozilla and login to mail I receive new mesgs in my inbox for both builds. I am not sure where you are seeing your error. I agree that in all steps we shouldn't be checking for new mesgs but this has been around for a while. My steps all sound like bugs. I haven't tested pop mail acnts. And I couldn't find any similar bugs out there except a turbo related bug (i didn't have turbo on when doing my test cases), see bug 143848.

thank you for your extensive research. i probably should have noted that the checking for messages only occurs after initially manually checking for messages after startup. to re-state, after startup (with both "check for new messages..." options turned off or "unchecked" ), new messages are not checked by mozilla until i click get new messages. after that, new messages are automatically checked and downloaded from the imap server or appear in the imap inbox message list. i run filters to sort mail and after arrival of a new message which meets a filter critera the message will be downloaded and deposited in a local folder according to the filter rules. i cannot say how much time elapeses between the actual arrival of the message to the server before mozilla recognizes the new message and processes it. i would think that the message should not be processed or recognezed as new mail because both of the "check for new message.." options are unchecked. i should also mention that i run gkrellm which checks for new messages on the imap server (it is set for check only and is not supposed to do anything else). i will turn that off and run some tests to see how (if at all) it effects the behavior i observe. more later when i get home to test... thanks :)
i created a new profile and unchecked "check for new mail..." options and restarted mozilla. behaves as expected. created a completely different imap server account and instructed mozilla to check for new messages on that server every minute and restarted mozilla. both servers behave as expected. turned on gkrellm and activated "check for new messages" for the imap server where mozilla is instructed to not check for new messages. behaves as expected, new messages do not automatically appear in the server inbox (unless prompted by me :) behaves as expected for me is while i am viewing the imap server's inbox it should not check for new messages with "check for new messages..." options unchecked. it will check for new messages if i click on another folder then click back on the inbox folder for that server. i'm not sure if this is correct behavior for a server which is told not to check for new messages, but this is not my complaint and should be separate from this bug report. in my default profile, new messages would appear in the server's inbox and filters would run on those new messages automatically without any interaction from me at all even though the "check for new messages..." options were turned off. i can only conclude that something horked with my default profile which causes this unexpected behavior as i could not duplicate the unwelcome behavior with a fresh profile. i'm going to try to resolve this bug as "worksforme" but perhaps a new bug could be filed for not checking for new messages upon viewing an inbox folder where "check for new message..." options are turned off? i would think that in this case new messages should only be retrieved upon mouse click of "get new messages" button or menu file -> get new messages or by ctl-t keyboard shortcut. thanks for your help! :)

I second this bug. When both "Check for new messages..." boxes under Server Settings are unchecked Thunderbird still does check messages. Thunderbird 24.1.1 on Win8.1 Pro x64
