Steps to reproduce:

Cleaned out some messages from my Inbox, deleting them individually.

Closed Thunderbird.

An hour later, opened Thunderbird to find that those messages (some of them months old) were still present in Trash AND in the Inbox.

When this happened, I reviewed the settings and I had the Trash Retention Policy set to delete after 180 days, and I had the "Leave message on server" disabled.

Actual results:

After deleting the messages again, I now have duplicate messages in Trash.

This bug has been going on for years across many versions of Thunderbird. This is the first time I realized the messages are being duplicated to the Inbox rather than just magically multiplying inside of the Trash folder.

I last posted about this 4 years ago:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1267794

Some tweaks to settings and updates seem to mitigate the problem, but it has never been fully resolved.

Expected results:

Messages should not be duplicated.

Unsure if this is relevant, but when I click on a single message in the Inbox and then click the Delete button, the status bar momentarily displays text that says, "Moved 8 messages from Inbox to Trash." That's an odd reaction to deleting a single message.

I'm also seeing message duplication in folders that are normally unused. I have a Local Folders subfolder where every message is display twice.
