User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20021003 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20021003 Out of box RH 8 with all RHN updates, Gnome desktop, Mozilla (installed plugger and add-ins [Xanim, java, etc. - what a pain!]). Page with background sounds do not play them: <head> <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0"> <META NAME="robots" CONTENT="noindex"> <title>MikeV's Home Page</title> <base target="_top"> <bgsound src="takeonme.midi" loop="3"> </head> This url plays the background music http://www.mm-vanecek.com/takeonme.midi This url does not play the background music http://www.mm-vanecek.com/ Also, embedded sounds do not work: <P><EMBED src=mvsbirth_files/birthday.mid width=130 height=50 loop="2" autostart="true"><noembed><BGSOUND src="mvsbirth_files/birthday.mid" loop=2></noembed></CENTER></P></BODY></HTML> This url does not play the background music http://www.mm-vanecek.com/mvsbirth.html This url does play the background music http://www.mm-vanecek.com/mvsbirth_files/birthday.mid Pages work with IE5.5 How can I get Mozilla to play music on a web page? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Go to www.mm-vanecek.com 2. 3. Actual Results: No background music. Expected Results: Played background music. Home page has been run through the W3 validator.
bgsounds is an unsupported IE TAG. embed sound should work. Do you see .wav in help/about:plugins ?
The doctype dtd has defined bgsound. I updated it so that it passes the W3 validation test. How does one setup a page to play background sounds with Mozilla? From the help page: audio/wav Microsoft wave file wav Yes audio/x-wav Microsoft wave file wav Yes However, the embedded file is a midi file, not .wav? This one is also running into bgsound. Neither EMBED nor BGSOUND work. Any workaround since a lot of sites use both tags?
sorry i mean ".midi" (does plugger supports .midi ?) You can't use bgsound (your dtd doesn't help) embed should work and it does for me on win32 with quicktime. ( audio/mid MIDI file mid, midi, smf, kar Yes)
the <embed> tag worksforme. try running Mozilla from a terminal. I got the message: /tmp/mcop-andrew is not owned by user (somehow, it was owned by root) I removed the bogus directory and tried again. It worked. Note that you need to have something installed (timidity) to actually play the midi file. plugger only hands the file off from Mozilla to another app.
Plug-in Definitions audio/mid MIDI audio file midi, mid Yes audio/x-mid MIDI audio file midi, mid Yes audio/midi MIDI audio file midi, mid Yes audio/x-midi MIDI audio file midi, mid Yes Plugger and Timidity installed url This url plays the background music http://www.mm-vanecek.com/takeonme.midi No problems with mcop-user since I was running as root; tried it as user and checked permissions of mcop-userid, all ok. Not exactly sure how to run it via a terminal window; I did start it from a terminal window with no errors. Matti - this is Red Hat 8.0; not Windows hence win32 may not be applicable. Matti & Andrew: Does sound work for you at my url (wwww.mm-vanecek.com) or are you using a different url. If you are using a different url, please post it and I will test it. I am using Mozilla 1.0.1; would it make any difference with 1.2.1?
> I am using Mozilla 1.0.1; would it make any difference with 1.2.1? Please try this with a daily trunk build: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/ Full-page is differenet than embedded. Do both of these work: <EMBED src="http://www.mm-vanecek.com/takeonme.midi"> <IFRAME src="http://www.mm-vanecek.com/takeonme.midi"> Note: Win32 QT 6 prompts you to do an extra download for this file so you may need to reload the page. Finally, attaching a plugin log would also help: set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=Plugin:5,PluginNPN:5,PluginNPP:5
Would this bugzilla report have any relevance to the problem: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=77271 I have created two very simple test files: http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed.html http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed2.html http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed3.html Neither work although http://www.mm-vanecek.com/mvsbirth_files/birthday.mid still starts plugger and plays sound. >Please try this with a daily trunk build: >http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/ No nightly builds for RH 8. >Finally, attaching a plugin log would also help: >set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=Plugin:5,PluginNPN:5,PluginNPP:5 Once I set this environmental variable and run Mozilla, where does one find the plugin log to attach? Does something else need be done to create a log? >Note: Win32 QT 6 prompts you to do an extra download for this file so you may >need to reload the page. Not quite sure what to make of this comments since I am running out of box RH 8 install. Time to upgrade?
>>Please try this with a daily trunk build: >>http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/ > No nightly builds for RH 8. if you can't live without RPMs, this should be sufficient: http://download.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.3a/Red_Hat_8x_RPMS/ for the logging, you also need to set: NSPR_LOG_FILE=/tmp/plugin.log all three testcase workforme with linux trunk 20030114
Completely uninstalled all components of mozilla-1.0.1, plugger-4.0-17 (rpm -e plugger hangs system; have to delete /var/lib/_dbs and rebuilddb unless --nodep is used),and evolution-xxx (because of dependency problem). Installed mozilla-1.2.1-0 components and other items as shown below (rpm -ivh plugger-xx without --nodeps hangs rpm system forcing deletion of /var/lib/_dbs and rebuilddb). [root@www root]# rpm -qa | grep -i plugger plugger-4.0-17 [root@www root]# rpm -qa | grep -i mozilla mozilla-nspr-1.2.1-0_rh8_xft mozilla-1.2.1-0_rh8_xft [root@www root]# rpm -qa | grep -i timi timidity++-2.11.3-4 Test files now play music but do not show control panel (only a blank space where it should be located) http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed.html http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed2.html http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed3.html Someone else on the RH list also indicated he was having the same problem. Also, leaving the page or exiting Mozilla often does NOT unload plugger and timidity leaving music playing until one does a kill -9 plugger and timidity. Do you want logging next, an upgrade to 1.3a, or what? The java plug-in is working correctly. Have not test shockwave. Arrows keys do not work in this box, is that another bug?
After change, non-root accouts do not have music. Tested on card_embed3.html admin 2799 0.0 0.3 2236 460 ? S 01:57 0:00 plugger 128,2147483647,26,29360129,8,25,240,200 /home/admin/.mozilla/default/kadmin 2800 0.0 0.3 2236 460 ? S 01:57 0:00 plugger 128,2147483647,27,29360129,8,25,240,200 /home/admin/.mozilla/default/kadmin 2801 0.4 0.0 0 0 ? Z 01:57 0:00 [timidity <defunct>] admin 2802 0.3 0.0 0 0 ? Z 01:57 0:00 [timidity <defunct>] plugger and timidity appear to have started. When Mozilla is exited, processes have to be killed.
plugger does not provide a control panel and timidity is a commandline utility. no control panel. closing the tab for the first two testcases stops the music, but plugger does not properly "wait" for timidity if the tab is closed before the music ends (timidity and another plugger thread become zombies). The zombies exit when Mozilla exits. for the third testcase, the music continues even after the tab is closed, and even after Mozilla exits. the problem is that Mozilla fires off two plugger processes playing the music simultaneously. Closing the tab (or exitting) only stops one of the plugins. I don't see anything that different in the third testcase to cause this behavior.
>/tmp/mcop-andrew is not owned by user >(somehow, it was owned by root) >I removed the bogus directory and tried again. It worked. Permissions were set to admin, but just to make sure I rm /tmp/mcop-admin. Sounds now play in non-root account. >plugger does not provide a control panel and timidity is a commandline utility. > no control panel. Since <EMBED> automatically brings up the control panel, what plugin or module needs to be installed to support a control panel (in Linux RH 8)? >NSPR_LOG_MODULES=Plugin:5,PluginNPN:5,PluginNPP:5 >NSPR_LOG_FILE=/tmp/plugin.log I typed these as shown, started Mozilla, played card_embed3, but do not see a plugin.log being generated. What else needs to be done to generate the log? > Closing the tab (or exitting) only stops one of the plugins. I will have to double check, but I thought both were left running. In any event, the page should not fire off two and at least one is left running which is an error. You guys ever thought about including your own plugin manager and basic plugins with the browser?
testing with 1.2 is useless because it is so old. PLEASE verify this bug exists in today's trunk: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz
Peter: I was testing trunk build 20030114
>testing with 1.2 is useless because it is so old. PLEASE verify this bug exists I have installed ver 1.3a. Mozilla 1.3a Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021212 Double start of plugger at http://www.mm-vanecek.com/ http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed3.html still occurs.
I have installed the latest release, version 1.3. Mozilla 1.3 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030314 Going to these links still causes a double start of plugger and tmidity: http://www.mm-vanecek.com/ http://www.mm-vanecek.com/card_embed3.html
http://mozplugger.mozdev.org/ Major Changes over Plugger 4.0 : - Fixed bug with Mozilla 1.x : a zombie process was created for each loaded plugin, until Mozilla exits. I filed bug 201907 for the problem with testcase #3 (spawning two timidity instances) marking this bug WORKSFORME since it no longer occurs in recent builds
