Actual Results: No results come up. Expected Results: There should be some search results.
Reporter: How are you Searching for a message? You can type text in the "Subject or Sender Contains" box to filter the header pane. That WFM fine. Win2k 2003011204 It's also possible to search using Tools -> Search Messages This method uses a server-side search, as opposed to the client-side filter above. Not all NNTP servers support this search command, though.

I've also run into this problem using Mozilla (W2K, Mozilla 1.3 release and prior). As a matter of fact, I stayed with Netscape 4.74, 4.75 for a long time because it could do this search, and mozilla could not. It still doesn't work in mozilla. I am using the tools->search messages menu, but this seems to also be the case for all searches except for the filter bar. The filter bar helps a lot, but it doesn't give all the functionality of the search messages dialog. Therefore, it would be nice if I could use the search messages dialog to do my searches. I don't know about the NNTP capability comment, as Netscape 4.74's search messages dialog worked flawlessly on this exact same forum, which is forums.sybase.com -> sybase.public.sqlanywhere.general. If you go to this forum, you will realize why I need the search capability so badly. Please Please fix this!
Greg, enable NNTP logging and post your results for a search: http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/tests/sea-mn-newsgroup-function.html#NNTP%20Log%20File%20Setup

This is the log when doing a tools->search messages with specifier of subject contains "migrate". This log also contains the initial connection to the newsgroup, and checking for new messages in the newsgroup at the top. The search portion is at the bottom. I've left the log intact so that I didn't inadvertently discard useful information.

Regarding the prior attachment, it appears that the nntp server finds 221 messages that match the search, but they do not get pulled in by mozilla. Granted, I'm not versed at nntp logs, so maybe I am way off on this.
The "221" is actually an NNTP response code. (meaning success) The problem is, the NNTP server is returning nothing to Mozilla after it issues the XPAT command. So technically, the problem is on the server end, which would make this INVALID. But I'm actually, going to mark this as a dupe of bug 92746 That bug covers having the search command use the headers that were already downloaded. (Since some NNTP servers do not support searching) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 92746 ***
