Hi Tom, thanks for reporting this! Does it reproduce with https://jan-ivar.github.io/dummy/gum_picker_output3.html (hit the Go!
button to start)?
Since it doesn't happen for me, would you perhaps be able to download and run the https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression tool to pinpoint the regression range and post it here?

Which Macbook Pro is this, and could you share a recording of said muffling and distortion? Does it reproduce 100% Does it reproduce also in Safari?
Also a log from a use case where you start the capture of this device could be handy, in case we want to add it to the blocklist:
- Go to
about:logging
- select the
WebRTC
preset - click "Start Logging"
- in another tab start capturing the internal mic such that it captures audio as described
- back on
about:logging
click "Stop Logging" - in the profiler window that appears, upload the profile (a button near the top right corner) with hidden threads included and share the link here, please.
Most likely this is bug 1670633. Does a 122 regression match what you've seen? Also does it help if you on about:config
set the pref media.getusermedia.microphone.prefer_voice_stream_with_processing.enabled
to false
?
If all of the above I imagine you'll be at least partially helped by bug 1404972. We have seen some clipping with Apple's voice processing audio unit before and it should be helped by bug 1404972. But muffled sound would be something else.
Setting tracking flags based on these assumptions, we can adjust later if needed.
