User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:126.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/126.0
Steps to reproduce:
N/A
Actual results:
- Nightly suddenly requires updates to be installed manually over the past week.
- Update checker says "failed to check for updates"
Windows 10 Pro 22H2, Nightly Firefox Version 126.0a1 (2024-04-09) (64-bit)
Expected results:
- Nightly downloads updates automatically then prompts a restart
- Update checker either finds an update or confirms that the browser is up-to-date

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Toolkit::Application Update' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi Balaurdbondoc,
We were not able to reproduce this issue on an update from 126.0a1(20240409093900) to 127.0a1(20240416214037), both me and my colleague have Win10 22H2 versions.
So we need you to enable a log to see if any error is reported. In order to do that you need to:
- go to the location were your profile was created (you can find the exact location by accessing about:profiles page your profile -> Root Directory)
- Add a user.js file in the profile location with the following line "user_pref("app.update.log", true);"
- restart Firefox.
- open Browser Console and attach all the information from there to this bug.
Thank you.

This doesn't seem like a very common state so I'm marking this as P3 S3 for now. The log looks like your installation is having trouble determining whether the update URL is correct. However, on my system the URL works correctly. Are you running any kind of antivirus, firewall, or VPN?

I run the standard Windows Defender and will occasionally use VPN. It still occurs when I am not using VPN though.

Specifically, are you using NordVPN? There's another open ticket at Bug 1892521 describing how one of their features breaks Firefox auto updates. There's also a support article describing how to fix this state (assuming you are using Nord).

Thanks Nipun. That is indeed the case! Marking this as "duplicate" to Bug 1892521.
