Attached video Screencast from 2024-04-13 12-58-25.webm (obsolete) —

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:124.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/124.0

Steps to reproduce:

I noticed this for almost a year now. When trying to drag a tab into a folder of the bookmarks toolbar, the folder opens up only when the mouse cursor dragging starts farther right than the folder in the ui.

I attached a screen recording to demonstrate.

  • Have bookmarks menu open with folders left and right of a tab
  • Try to drag a tab into a folder in the bookmarks menu

Actual results:

  • If the mouse cursor starts dragging from a position farther right than the folder, the folder opens and allows adding the bookmark there.
  • If the mouse cursors starts dragging from a position farther left than the folder, the folder does not open and adding the bookmark like that is not possible.

Expected results:

The bookmark should be added via drag and drop regardless from where the mouse cursor starts dragging the tab.

Apologies about the mouse pointer not showing in the recording, in Gnome apparently there currently is a bug in that regard where it only works in screenshots. I tried to indicate the starting position of the mouse pointer before the tabs are dragged with a circle.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Bookmarks & History

I managed to replicate this issue in Nightly 127.0a1 and Firefox 124.0.2 on Ubuntu 22.04. However, it only occurred when I had a single tab open. In this scenario, I could bookmark the tab by dragging it from the left or right corner. However, if I initially bookmarked the tab by dragging it to a folder from the right corner, subsequent attempts to bookmark it by dragging from the left corner failed. Similarly, if I first bookmarked it by dragging from the left corner, I couldn't then bookmark it by dragging from the right corner.
Setting this as "NEW."

We're not able to reproduce on Windows or Mac, so assuming this is a Linux only issue.

We should probably start with some debugging to see if the issue is in the places drag and drop anchor calculations.
