User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:126.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/126.0

Steps to reproduce:

See Bug 1896646

Actual results:

See Bug 1896646

Expected results:

A boolean pref like browser.urlbar.ignoreSlashWhenSpaceCharPresent which when set to "true" would always make the string open in the users search engine if at least one space character is present, would be amazing!

Meant to paste it in bold, sorry. -> browser.urlbar.ForceSearchWhenSpaceCharPresent

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Address Bar

The problem with adding another preference, is that, like all the others, it adds maintenance and QA costs. So we usually do when a request is supported by feedback by many users. You may try to gather support from other users on https://connect.mozilla.org/, and if it ends up as a supported idea we may re-evaluate.

Notice however that there's plenty of workarounds already (as I explained in bug 1896646), plus we are working on a very visible Search option in bug 1891862, that will be another way of achieving the same result. So we feel like coverage for this use-case is sufficient.
We'll continue monitoring feedback from users and re-evaluate in the future based on that. I'm resolving for now.

Well, the fastest solution for this super strange-design idea (which is a problem imo) is to add search bar back to next to the URL bar. I'll stick with that for now, although it sadly takes away very precious 100-150 pixels of my URL bar... -.-

I still fail to see why CTRL+K is not a valid option.

How about because for example the K is incredibly far away from LCTRL button? (which would be used by the left hand, as right hand always is on mouse while webbrowsing. It almost hurts my hand to reach with left hand pointing finger to K while holding pinky on LCTRL. It definitely is incredibly uncomfortable.)

What about CTRL+E?

Wow that works too, okay. Thanks. Why is that function double-assigned though, to 2 different keybindings? o_O

historical reasons, CTRL+E was used in Internet Explorer.

(In reply to Marco Bonardo [:mak] from comment #3)

we are working on a very visible Search option in bug 1891862

Do you know what Dale meant by "search modes" in his first post in that bug? I can't find anything about different "search modes" on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/#search . Or did he simply mean "switch between search mode and URL mode"?

Flags: needinfo?(mak)

Picking a search engine or a group (like Tabs, History, Bookmarks) enters Search Mode for that specific source, showing a chiclet in the address bar (e.g. the engine name) and suggestions. We refer to that as Search Mode.
