[Notes]:
- If the message is required to be a contextual response to actions made by the user, simply navigating to and from a page or refreshing it should not lead to the assumption that users would need to pin that tab. Opening a new tab and specifically navigating to a page is a much clearer marker that users might benefit from having that tab pinned.
[Affected versions]:
- Firefox Nightly 128.0a1 - Build ID: 20240529214854
- Firefox Beta 127.0b8 - Build ID: 20240529091551
- Firefox Release 126.0.1 - Build ID: 20240526221752
[Affected Platforms]:
- Windows 10
- macOS 14
- Ubuntu 22.04
[Prerequisites]:
- Have a Firefox build installed and use a new profile.
- Be enrolled in any branch (except control) of the Pin Email and Calendar experiment (early day / existing) through forced enrollment.
- Unenroll from any experiment or rollout that the profile might be in using the about:studies page.
[Steps to reproduce]:
- Open the browser with the profile from prerequisites and navigate to
https://www.reddit.com/. - Click the
Go back one pagebutton then theGo forward on pagebutton. - Repeat step 2 two more times.
- Observe the active tab.
[Expected result]:
- No message is displayed.
[Actual result]:
- The "Pin" message is displayed.
[Additional Notes]:
- The issue is also reproducible if the page is refreshed twice instead of going back and forth.
- Attached a screen recording of the issue.

We've discussed and agreed it's not a blocker for the experiment, since it's a lot of labor to avoid this and it wouldn't improve the UX enough to be of much value.

Won't fix for this experiment, but we'll discuss if this default OPEN_URL behavior is desired and whether we should consider changing it.
