User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:129.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/129.0

Steps to reproduce:

every time now Nightly updates, all of my Windows 11 icons become blurry & fuzzy. updated nightly, instant Windows icons fuzzy on whole system. forcing a restart of explorer to get them back to normal.

Actual results:

every time now Nightly updates, all of my Windows 11 icons become blurry & fuzzy. updated nightly, instant Windows icons fuzzy on whole system. forcing a restart of explorer to get them back to normal.

Expected results:

nightly should update not affecting my icons system wide on Windows 11 !

I believe this is a Nightly GUI/Scaling issue of some kind but have no idea how this is happening. I'll add screenshots later for comparison of windows icons before updating and immediately afterward as I can't restart explorer right now anyway.

Hello, thank you for the bug report!
Could you please detail the steps to reproduce or attach a screenshot of the issue? Alternatively, are there any other configurations needed in order to reproduce?

Moving the Component to ‘General’. Please change if there’s a better fit, thank you.

I'll try. It's very subtle icon distortion or blur of desktop and explorer icons in Windows that occurs every time I update nightly for whatever reason. Icons are crisp and clear with the correct display scaling and after every Nightly update, the icons blur up and I have to restart explorer or restart the PC to get the icons back to normal again. Seems to be possibly related to Nightly GUI scaling perhaps? attached some icons as an example and if you look close you can see the correct resolution scaling on one and slight fuzziness on the other. the crisp is before update the fuzzy ones are after an update.

Crisp icons correct scaling resolution display

Post update, icons are now fuzzy not displaying correct scaling resolution.

additional update that could indicate this is a multi pronged display scaling issue not necessarily tied to only Nightly regardless of whether it only happens when I update Nightly. so just being honest. This issue seems to only occur when I have my Samsung SSD external drive plugged in and I then update Nightly at the same time. This consistently causes a scaling display disruption with all Windows 11 icons for some reason. I haven't tried additional external drives yet to compare but will. Anyway, it could be an issue that involves updating Nightly along with another issue with external drives connected for whatever reason. very odd though. After unplugging the SSD drive and then updating Nightly, the icons did not have any scaling issue. I will try again later today with next update with drive plugged in to verify this.

update today. the last 2 updates for whatever reason, have had no distortion of scaling of icons. not sure if the issue has been resolved but the last two updates one without the external drive connected and one with it connected have had zero distortion of icons after updating Nightly. Could the issue have been resolved? time will tell.

4-5 update later, it was updating without issue, but then tonight's update the icons were distorted once again. if it is related to nightly's GUI scaling, then something in tonight's update I just updated to caused the distortion to return to all my icons once again. Prior to tonight's update, the scaling issue had been completely gone and was updating fine without distorting Window's icons.

As this seems related to anti-aliasing and graphics, moving over there for more expertise - though it might end up belonging in Core :: Windows Widget instead.

It would probably be helpful to have the output from about:support (Help > More troubleshooting information, then click "copy raw data to clipboard", then attach in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?bugid=1904757&action=enter ) to help understand what is going on.

back to doing it again. whatever the updates were doing prior, they were not force refreshing the icons on windows and distorting them. The last 4-5 updates since the issue returned. seems to do an icon refresh on the desktop icons and they are distorted... only way to resolve is force restart explorer. Prior to my post on comment 7, there were about 7-8 days worth of updates where the issue was gone completely. Nothing changed on my end in configuration other than updating Nightly that day in the morning.

This morning's update to nightly updated fine without any icon scaling distortion.

:bhood, could you have a look please?

Tentatively classifying as S3. This is annoying, but it doesn't seem to break anybody's workflow.

So...spiderman0000111 has the issue been resolved? Should this be closed as WORKSFORME?

If not, perhaps we could use mozregression to see if we can establish which change broke this for you?

well, it's coming and going lol. some updates are no problem. I've gone days without it affecting the icon scaling. then boom. one update later, it's back. I don't know what causes it. Maybe it's just my system for all I know. What I do know is that it only really happens after a Nightly update restart that seems to trigger it. it has now come and gone numerous times throughout the last weeks of updates.

Flags: needinfo?(spiderman0000111)

I should add, tonights update and the last few have resulted in icon scaling distortion forcing me to restart explorer to restore them again. Which is annoying and occasionally interrupts my workflow in having to reopen some explorer windows again.
