User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:128.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/128.0
Steps to reproduce:
- Launched Thunderbird
Actual results:
Thunderbird uses in excess of 300MB of memory right after launch and it doesn't go down either. No e-mail was opened, see attached screenshot, so no advanced HTML document is being rendered either. Even if I tab away and just let it sit idle, memory use doesn't go down.
For what it's worth, I checked the troubleshooting info: In excess of 100MB of this seems to be just textures of web render. That seems odd for showing a basic folder view.
Expected results:
Thunderbird uses less memory in idle when just launched and no e-mail is shown.
Windows 10 OS - Mine uses about 318MB, but that's not unusual for me - it seems stable.
Have you used this info to check: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems
I attached a memory report which should allow easy checking. What else do you want me to look at? The page you linked says more than 300MB could be a problem.

This is not a bug (certainly if we knew how to decrease usage, we would). 330MB is not a whole lot - I certainly have it using much more than that normally.
Maybe it could be turned into a feature request? On modern devices like the Steam Deck with 16GB RAM, all the electron-or-electron-like web UI apps like Thunderbird using what seems like 100-200MB more for just displaying basic listings really adds up. On the PinePhone with 3GB RAM where using Thunderbird also makes sense, it's an even bigger issue. It would be nice if this could be looked at. Unless I'm somehow mistaken, this doesn't just seem to concern theoretical devices no longer in use.
(I assume this might also be a firefox web engine problem upstream. How much memory webrender seems to need to display an e-mail list seems suspicious, and even if that speeds it up on some machines seems like it'd backfire on many memory-constrained machines.)

That would not be a useful feature request. Any gains will be by small gains of a few bytes here and there that developers may happen do improve.
I see!
For what it's worth, my currently open Thunderbird seems to use 241MB just for web render though, which sounds like a problem with the render engine that is fixable. My apologies for underestimating how complex Thunderbird and Firefox are, but it seems like e.g. the tabs not currently visible may be keeping all their textures and render targets loaded even though they aren't being rendered or looked at. But I understand you have better things to do.
It's just that even for constrained devices like the Raspberry Pi, Thunderbird is often the go-to e-mail client. But of course that's not a fate or use case that you chose to be part of, I get that.
